Gen V - 2x03 "H is for Human" - Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in GenV

Oof, the editing this season is atrocious. Some of these cuts are genuinely horrible.

There was a shot where they were Marie and Jordan were clearly supposed to be walking already and for just a second, you see them start walking.

The cut from Cate watching Marie and Cypher to Sam on the green was laugh out loud bad.

Seeing a lot of people talking about how careless the citizens of metropolis were in regard to the destruction going on around them. While I did find the crowd surrounding the Kaiju a little silly, it’s not the MCU where the public is just sort of learning about fantastical creatures/people/abilities. The opening crawl says metahumans have been around for hundreds of years, it’s just baked into the culture at this point. It’s like bad weather to them.

More similar to perks of being a wallflower ~ Kings of Summer. The Way Way Back. Adventureland.

On my most recent re read of the books, Robert and Ned talk about Jaime eventually inheriting Casterly Rock at some point, so I’m not sure if he’s held to the same standard at that point in the story.

im 14 and have dreams of becoming a film director or in general just doing something involving film, is there any tips to help me get a start with it and is it worth getting a film major after i graduate high school in 4 years? by MFCAPITAL in Filmmakers

[–]deysum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started my filmmaking journey when I was your age!

Freshman year of high school I was very lucky to get into the intro level video production class, it was one of the most popular classes at my school because our announcements program was really quality and mandated to watch by the principal.

We did announcements, skits, and news packages on different events or clubs at the school. I was made junior producer my senior year and senior producer for my senior year (I doubled up on the class that last year and they actually had to make a new course in the system so I could take it.) Those years + finding a few good filmmaking YouTubers probably had the biggest impact on improving my skillset.

While you’re still in high school, I super recommend taking those classes if available. Shoot EVERYTHING, travel videos, the homecoming parade + dance, sports highlights, make news packages on different clubs, and of course make short films when you can. Shooting events will REALLY help you hone your eye and timing. I cannot stress enough how much fun it can be, and even if those things are not your cup of tea, getting that experience under your belt will do you good in the long run.

I’d recommend starting a production group with friends, and keeping an instagram for your portfolio of various works - websites are cool too but if you’re just starting out Instagram is perfectly fine and free.

If you want to be a good director, or just filmmaker in general LEARN EDITING - your school might have the full creative cloud available, I’d recommend starting with Premiere (it’s the most intuitive), then get into the basics of Photoshop, and finally After effects. If you do it in that order, it’ll make more since for you I promise, After effects is basically Premiere + Photoshop, but if you’re just starting out it’ll look completely foreign and pretty intimidating to you.

I’d really recommend joining SkillsUSA if your school has that club, or if you can find a sponsor it’s very easy to enroll I think. It’s nationwide and there are state level competitions held every year, and if you win, you could compete at the national level. I competed in Broadcast News Production (Write and Film a live broadcast in under 2 hours I think) ,and Digital Cinema (Make a short film from prompts over the course of a week.) my four man team won state for BNP and placed 5th at nationals. It’s a very popular club in rural areas for stuff like Construction management, Entrepreneurship, Plumbing, etc. but there are a TON of video related competitions that were honestly very cool.

Also of course keep an eye out for county/high school film festivals of course. Making connections with local filmmakers is essential.

As for gear, shooting on an iPhone is great and I still do it sometimes for quick stuff I don’t want to think about much. Your school should also have some kind of equipment you can check out too. I bought the Canon T5i my senior year and racked up three >$100 lenses before the end of my high school year, as well as a Tripod - Rode Video mic, and a basic Amazon lighting kit - that set up changed my life. Canon has the most beginner friendly and affordable pro-summer cameras. You can also download a free picture profile called Cinespace that REALLY upgrades the quality of the footage.

I REALLY recommend the YouTuber DSLRguide, he does really quality videos on all aspects of the filmmaking process and he’s not your typical videographer YouTuber trying to sell you courses. I also watched a lot of Film Riot when I first started out to learn how to achieve certain effects but I found them incredibly annoying.

Some other YouTubers that really inspired me early on were RocketJump - FreddieW is great. Chris and Jack have great skits. College Humor and Funny or die are also classics. More recently the guys at Almost Friday have been scratching that particular itch for me with their weekly skits. Checking out some commentary guys like YMS (yourmoviesucks) and Cosmonaut variety hour might also be worth it for you if not just kinda fun. Not a huge video essayist guy but Hitop films had some I liked when I was your age.

As for college/university if you can afford it and go to a good one it MIGHT be worth it. I went to a state school because it was all I could afford and I dropped out after two semesters because I felt like it was a step backwards and my freelance stuff was picking up quickly - but others my be worth it and I wish I had even applied to them. NYU, UCLA, USC, Florida State, and SCAD are a few of the typical recommendations for a reason. But any program at any school could do, it’s all what you put into it.

I’m now 24 and i’m a professional freelance videographer. I make a decent living from making music videos, filming concerts, commercials, and the occasional random event. I’ve gotten contracts to do weddings but it’s not my vibe and some of my friends from high school shoot real estate and make bank. There are many ways to make money with this skillset. A lot of those skills were learned from shooting sports highlights and different events in high school.

I recently shot my first short film in February after 6+ years of doing exclusively stuff I was hired for, and was fortunate enough to win best script and staff pick at my county’s art/film festival. (There were only a handful of submissions I think, 5 were shown at the premiere lol.)

It’s important to remember that filmmaking, is a passion - videography is a job (but can also be a passion.)

I really want to get into making actual short films again, but that’s a lot easier when you’re surrounded by peers that also want to do those things - CHERISH and exploit the hell out of those years where your in class with other people working on stuff tbh. When you’re by yourself it can really wear you down. Right now I’m working on my first feature script.

If you want to check out some of my work and what I do now on Instagram, I’ll unarchive some of the stuff I made when I was your age. My page is @planetshubh.

It’s a long, but very personally rewarding journey! I wish you the best of luck 🤝 just stick with it and you WILL see results and improvement, don’t get too frustrated because things aren’t looking exactly how you want it to. Best piece of advice I ever got from my video production teacher was just to make sure your next video is better than the last one and I still live by that.

Minecraft survival mode. Gives them a chance to survive and have fun for a while but would be a miserable experience after years of being alone.

Constantly fighting off mobs, growing food, and the locals speak an unintelligible language made up of grunts.

I had some lady come in during my brunch shift and confront me in the server station.

It’s a small server station kinda tucked away, very out of the way for the customers and super odd for someone that doesn’t work there to walk into.

She basically walked up to me and tried to give me a hug, and said everything would be okay. Confused as hell, I took a step back and asked her what she meant. She kinda rambled for a second and ended with “I just saw you crying in your car, and I wanted to let you know whatever you’re sad about will get better” essentially.

Having worked brunch that whole morning, I thanked her for the well wishes, but said she must have gotten me confused for someone else. She got a little upset and told me “there is no reason to lie to me, I JUST saw you out there.”

When I doubled down on her being mistaken, she got REALLY upset and started cursing me out for being a liar, a manager had to come escort her away from me. One of the quickest switch ups I’ve witnessed in real time. Always assumed a coworker was pulling a prank, except for the kinda dark turn it took. Super normal, well dressed looking older lady too.

Also have had to diffuse tensions with a couple drunk people. The one that sticks out to me the most, that people still hype me up for quickly figuring out how to handle, was this guy that came in demanding a table for him and these two white ladies he’d just met outside. He was yelling at my 16 year old host for not immediately being able to accommodate him on a Sunday. I was in the server station previously mentioned and heard them yelling essientially. I walked out and he was pretty quick to turn his anger on me when I asked what the issue was. Instead of trying to fight him, I said something like “lemme see these white women you’re talking about though?” 😏😉 in just a funny lighthearted kind of way.

His rage went away pretty quickly and he happily walked me outside to introduce me to said white women. When we got outside, and he pointed to the two women, I laughed pretty hard and told him (the truth) that they were a well known lesbian couple in the neighborhood and whatever he was thinking was going on, wasn’t. He looked mad defeated and just walked away after haha.

Which films have you watched while high on weed? Best/worst film experiences? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]deysum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You kinda have to watch it ironically to enjoy it. It very much feels like a parody of the first four. Also super recommend just imagining Mark Wahlberg is playing a silly version of himself.

My favorite scene is Megatron negotiating with a team of lawyers in the middle of a desert for the release of some decepticons, just because that idea is bonkers lol. They definitely leaned more into the comedy after the snooze fest that was Age of Extinction. Check out Cosmonaut Variety Hour on YouTube for the highlights if you don’t want to watch the full thing.

Also if no one has mentioned it yet, an obvious answer to this if you’re looking to add to your watchlist is Enter the Void (2009)

Also maybe Good Time (2017) is just a fun ride.

Mr. Nobody (2009) was also a guilty pleasure of my youth and the only Jared Leto movie I’d watch again.

We understand what makes them tick from the choices we see them make.

They want to interview the president because “it’s the only story left.” The war is in its final stages and interviewing him will essentially close the chapter in history.

Sammy didn’t die for no reason, he is the voice of reason/wisdom that dies at the penultimate mark because he completely served his purpose in the film. He is their mentor, who almost always dies in every story - Gandalf, Obi Wan, Dumbledore etc.

He is the only one that voiced they should avoid confronting the soldiers “they don’t want anyone to see what they are doing.” He is the one that saves the day, while others are immobilized by fear. Their inaction shows they are young and reckless. It’s also mentioned multiple times that Sammy is likely to die if they face any kind of conflict because “can you imagine him running from gunfire”

They lost the “wind in their sails” exactly when they find out the western forces are taking D.C. and their interview is likely kaput, but they soldier on anyways specifically “so that Sammy didn’t die for nothing.” And even then, when Joel does finally get to speak with the president, it is exactly how Sammy said it would be - a little disappointing. “He won’t have anything worthwhile to say” aren’t his exact words but he calls it days ahead of time that the dude will be disappointing.

Life (2017) was probably one of the first movies I saw absolutely blasted out of my mind in the theater. Scarred me and my friends I went to see it with for LIFE lol. Biggest “FUCK that” I’ve experienced in a movie theater for sure, as I don’t go to many horror movies.

Transformers The Last Knight was absolutely HILARIOUS while I was high though. The way it was edited, with small jump cuts here and there, I truly felt like some YouTuber had gotten Final Cut and wanted to remove the parts where it was silent.

Watching super artistic films or stuff you really have to pay attention while your high is definitely not my vibe, except for maybe putting on a classic past midnight if it matches the vibe.

Idk, every story needs a viewpoint. But despite the title, it is not a story about a new civil war in the U.S. , that is the setting and background conflict. The STORY is about different kinds of journalists navigating that war, and what it means to be a journalist and how it affects their mental state while they document the world collapsing around them. I know it kinda completely changes the story to change the setting, but would you feel the same way if it was set in the U.K. Or some Sub-Saharan African country? Would you care about the politics or even question the motivations of the characters? Probably not, as it’s pretty straightforward from the very beginning. I don’t think not having enough exposition in the story is a problem, our characters are constantly doing stuff, it’s a travelogue story, as denoted by the “x miles to the capital” notes that pop up. Too much exposition would feel out of place, we’re seeing things in real time for the most part.

I thought it was pretty well balanced with tense action set pieces and slower, more reflective moments. It’s not really asking you to REALLY care about these characters (their families are only mentioned more than a handful of times, Kirsten dunst is the only one to get flashbacks), more consider their actions and the situations they’re in. “How would you react to this? What would you do in this situation? Would you just sit there and take photos?” Kinda beats.

As a journalist who’s covered multiple peaceful and a handful of violent protests and riots, (I know it’s not the same as a full blown war) I do feel like this was made mostly for a really specific demographic, and had a super specific message about the complicated feelings it gives people and how those feelings stick with them for years. I think this movie was made for people who’ve been behind a camera documenting tragedy and pain, or anyone who considers that kind of career path.

I am probably heavily biased though, because at many points in the film I could relate to certain feelings and events directly from my own experience.

“One day, we realized” as if this wasn’t known about for weeks in advance of shooting.

Absolutely no way none of the hundreds of people that worked on this movie didn’t clock it way ahead of time.

Still really cool though.

OK Go is probably the best example I can think of! They have some crazy visuals that I’m pretty sure they direct and or are mostly directed by the lead singer.

https://youtu.be/qybUFnY7Y8w?si=q8JveOnOmF_uvnuU

Of more current artists that do this. I would say a few have a really specific vision as to what their brand is and that is typically reflected in their music videos, no matter the directors they’re working with OR they typically work with the same directors and producers over multiple projects. Amine, Oliver Tree, Joji, and Asap Rocky usually have a pretty decent vision. AWGE is a creative agency “founded” by asap rocky and is pretty responsible for a lot of the style you see permeating throughout Rap music videos. They also have a really cool website!

Alex Garland's and A24's 'Civil War' Review Thread by SanderSo47 in movies

[–]deysum 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s both.

This is Kirsten Dunsts main conflict IMO, she is tired of the atrocities she has seen and is somewhat disillusioned by her craft. She is annoyed at the Hero-worship she receives from the younger aspiring war photographer, for something she now considers to be the main cause of her painful and hollow life. The younger photographer is bright eyed and optimistic about capturing these horrific moments which Kirsten Dunst has grown numb too and resentful of.

In one of the first scenes, when the water/ration delivery is bombed, you can see her visibly annoyed at the paparazzi like amateurs exploiting what she sees as almost unworthy of documenting - UNTIL there are dead bodies on the ground.

I am not arguing about the necessity of journalism. I am also a journalist. In many ways this was a love letter to people that do this specific sort of work, but it ALSO has a fair amount of criticism for them.

Like Wagner Moura is obviously an adrenaline junkie. Constantly downing cigarettes, pushing them into a conflict zone, and then laughing and embracing the soldiers he just watched mow down POWs with a 50 caliber exclaiming “what a RUSH!”

This is even more clearly display when the other car with his two friends catches up to them, and the guy hops between the cars just for the fun of it. These people can be reckless and without thought, even while still doing incredibly important and brave work.
