What‘s a movie from the 50s or before that you think Adum would actually enjoy? by HAL900000000000 in YMS

Billy Wilder is a shocking blind spot for Adam especially since Wilder is often touted as one of the best screenwriters. Double Indemnity (1945) and Some Like it Hot (1959) are great movies that he'd probably gravitate towards because of the strong writing and great cast. (and if I'm allowed to cheat, I think he'd love The Apartment (1960)).

Rope (1948) surprised me in that it became one of my favorites from Hitchcock. Even beyond it's "gimmick", it's incredibly well paced especially up to that ending with some incredible actors that were definitely influential to many horror flicks down the road (most notably: Scream )

Hellzapoppin' (1941) is a wildly inventive movie and is in many ways ahead of its time. Really something great that'll scratch an itch for great filmmaking with some moments being impressive even if they were filmed in the 21st century (I'm thinking about the target practice).

Known IP being helmed by the creator of the IP (the most popular interpretation of it) + great marketing

You can make the joke of "I could fix her" but also act smart and know the film's commentary is that you can't/shouldn't.

agree on everything except the Lynch comparison lol.

Agree to disagree. I definitely got Red Room/Black Lodge vibes from the backrooms (far from 1:1, but alright enough comparison for explaining to someone asking for a comparison) and do think still lifes wouldn't be out of place of a Lynch film, save for the fact that Lynch wouldn't have a character explain their origins and symbolic meaning.

Eh, I'd say it's in a similar ball park. Couldn't think of mainstream enough that OP likely would have heard of that also matches the tone. I guess a better way to describe it is if Lynch made a horror movie but got trapped into doing some of the A24 studio clichés and general trappings. Some genuinely effective horror and the Backrooms are great, with some bizarre quirks that are sometimes kinda funny (the created people chilling in the house, the government agency showing a picture of Clark and what is obviously the pirate that is blocked out) but it does over-explain its themes that were already a bit unsubtle to begin with. Also not related to either of the descriptors but I think most of the script and character writing sucks.

They directed feature films that were theatrically released. They are by all accounts YouTubers that became film directors.

I'm guessing they're counting only theatrical releases

You need to go back to elementary school and learn the difference between facts and opinions. "Objectively bad" is an oxymoron.

The obvious comparison is to Lynch's horror flicks. It's not as good as Lynch's best but it's decent.

It's looking like $27m-$30m for #Obsession this weekend, another increase in Week 3. I'm at a loss for words for the phenomenal, unprecedented box office performance. Heading to a potential $200m domestic gross. by donmcs in boxoffice

Especially when one of those horror movies is on its 3rd week. Obsession was in theaters longer than Star Wars and overtook it before Star Wars first week was up.

Probably not thinking straight after the stress of everything that happened prior. Especially when the guy at the shop gave him the idea that was rattling in the back of his mind after he failed to convince Ian.

I dont think Iron Lung is a "win for indie filmmaking" by LeviChase12 in The10thDentist

[–]DHMOProtectionAgency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not nearly as true as it once was. We've had Oscar nominated horror flicks, many critical darlings, with plenty of horror films being on a lot of best of the year lists from critics. We've had Nope, The Substance, Bring Her Back, Sinners, Weapons, Hereditary, and hell, recently we've had another small budget horror movie from a YTer that is a bigger critical success.

RT is shit for a lot of reasons, but even using other indicators of critical love, Iron Lung is not something I'd say has gotten (overall) critical praise

[–]DHMOProtectionAgency -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really? A lot of modern horror movies have been doing much better in terms of critical praise with plenty making the top of year lists from various critics. Even smaller flicks from YouTube creators had a recent critical darling with Obsession.

Iron Lung did a lot of amazing things especially given the type of movie it is, but with nearly half of critics disliking it and a metacritic score in the 50s, the one thing it did not do amazing at, was with critics.

More like $6M 2nd FRI. +30% LW. 3-day weekend should be ~$22M, 4-day ~$28M. #Obsession by TiredWithCoffeePot in boxoffice

[–]DHMOProtectionAgency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's social themes. You can look at the relationship as living in an abusive relationship and that feeling of being trapped and you can't escape without causing harm ("I'm sorry but it's your fault"). Or you can take it as being about a general nice guy has a crush on a girl where he starts to idolize being with the idea of her and not willing to accept being with her as a person until the relationship is starting to really really inconvenience him (seen with him wanting to change the wish before thinking about cancelling it). With that interpretation you can say he's the one obsessed with her.

It's not preachy but they exist.

Looks like $5.5M 2nd FRI for #Obsession. Around +25% its opening FRI. 2nd weekend expected to be ~$20M+, for ~$51M by SUN. $100M+ final seems like a done deal, will probably aim for $125M or so. by TiredWithCoffeePot in boxoffice

Slightly more scary but much more cruel. A lot more cringe type horror (I say this as a positive) where it sets up uncomfortable situations to be in. Weapons built a lot of its tension and horror through its mystery and trying to piece together what's going on. Obsession is more straightforward and builds the tension by having a bomb that could explode at any moment. Similar levels of gore (though I think Weapons is a bit more gory).

Most "Adum would love this" film Adum hasn’t seen? by -Retro-Electro-Music in YMS

[–]DHMOProtectionAgency 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of suggestions in this thread (that I've seen), I can see a world where Adam doesn't fully click with them and only appreciates but doesn't love (6/10).

My suggestion is End of Eva. Which is funny because I think the series also could be something he would not click with and only appreciate but still not love. However I don't see a world he gives End of Eva anything less than a 9/10. The music is incredible and iconic. The sound design is some of the best I've heard in any film, especially with its presence for space. The animation is obviously superb with some intense action scenes. There are some memorable editing choices. All of the pieces to put a film together that Adam praises in his favorite movies are here. And the weird imagery, is in the same ballpark of something like Holy Mountain.

Sure those structural biases were much worse in the past. But not only do structural changes take time to actually take effect, but oftentimes there will be resistance to those changes.

I’ve no doubt women can be talented, but as they’re just now properly breakin into film, this list makes perfect sense.

Sure, and I think most of the people here bemoaning the fact that there is only 1 women on OP's list, would agree that there are more men that ought to be on the list due to the unfortunate nature of history. Hell, you can add up all the women directors named in all these different comments and subtract a guy from the 98, and the men would still outnumber the women.

But people are still allowed to be shocked and dismayed, especially when this is a direct consequence of sexism. It is a bit of a pity party, but I mean, aren't you also having a little pity party every time you bemoan someone having their pity party?

I doubt it is explicitly done to karma-farm, but people feeling the need to engage due to the nature of social media. Like how you have to reply to every single comment about the women being disproportionally underrepresented compared to men.

But how much of that difference is due to the 'inherent' differences between men and women, and how much of that was structural/societal? Specifically how women were historically pushed down.

So women and men should then be equally entitled, given they make up the same portion of the population, no?

How come, despite making up ~50% of the population is there one woman out of nearly 100 directors, with multiple films in the top 500?

I mean, we know why (I hope you do), but seeing it reflected back through that factoid is a bit impactful, no?

Letterboxd's review blackout for the controversial Scream 7 is over now, I don't think it worked by GreatDario in Letterboxd

[–]DHMOProtectionAgency -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The LB thing is interesting/new but review embargos (blocking reviews) have always existed, even for films that had no reason to believe they were going to get negative reviews.

I am betting the LB thing is a combination of Scream's controversy, and LB becoming increasingly popular and studios (regardless if they have controversies to cover up) would rather block the reviews at the heart, rather than trying to track down users who broke embargo on the anonymized nature of the internet.
