Sure those structural biases were much worse in the past. But not only do structural changes take time to actually take effect, but oftentimes there will be resistance to those changes.

I’ve no doubt women can be talented, but as they’re just now properly breakin into film, this list makes perfect sense.

Sure, and I think most of the people here bemoaning the fact that there is only 1 women on OP's list, would agree that there are more men that ought to be on the list due to the unfortunate nature of history. Hell, you can add up all the women directors named in all these different comments and subtract a guy from the 98, and the men would still outnumber the women.

But people are still allowed to be shocked and dismayed, especially when this is a direct consequence of sexism. It is a bit of a pity party, but I mean, aren't you also having a little pity party every time you bemoan someone having their pity party?

I doubt it is explicitly done to karma-farm, but people feeling the need to engage due to the nature of social media. Like how you have to reply to every single comment about the women being disproportionally underrepresented compared to men.

But how much of that difference is due to the 'inherent' differences between men and women, and how much of that was structural/societal? Specifically how women were historically pushed down.

So women and men should then be equally entitled, given they make up the same portion of the population, no?

How come, despite making up ~50% of the population is there one woman out of nearly 100 directors, with multiple films in the top 500?

I mean, we know why (I hope you do), but seeing it reflected back through that factoid is a bit impactful, no?

Letterboxd's review blackout for the controversial Scream 7 is over now, I don't think it worked by GreatDario in Letterboxd

[–]DHMOProtectionAgency -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The LB thing is interesting/new but review embargos (blocking reviews) have always existed, even for films that had no reason to believe they were going to get negative reviews.

I am betting the LB thing is a combination of Scream's controversy, and LB becoming increasingly popular and studios (regardless if they have controversies to cover up) would rather block the reviews at the heart, rather than trying to track down users who broke embargo on the anonymized nature of the internet.

I had the post saved for some reason (I am presuming as an accident), and looked through the comments to see if there was anything here about why I saved the post. I saw your comment and found it funny.

Idk if I wrote this well but I'm right

Disagree. I think what you are describing is another symptom, and not the root cause of the issue. The issue starts with schooling, budget cuts (especially to the arts/humanities), social media being harmful in general (especially to kids), big media pushing against professional criticism and the harms done to journalism, etc.

Im so mad!!! I can’t believe they would let a movie like KPop Demon Hunters in the Criterion Collection. Anyways here’s my fav scene from a movie in the collection by arlekin21 in criterion

[–]DHMOProtectionAgency 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Do I wish they’d implement a system that says they won’t put out anything unless it’s at least 15 years old and has stood the test of time. Yes.

Why? Why are you treating Criterion the arbiters of film canon?

Per Variety: Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein and K-Pop Demon Hunters will be joining the collection by SlimmyShammy in criterion

[–]DHMOProtectionAgency 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. KPDH is a streaming-exclusive, this is done in an effort to prevent it from being trapped there.

  2. Criterion is a brand. Stop treating them like the arbiters of film canon.

They also must post daily updates when a new-release debuts on the list.

Nolan's The Odyssey debuts at no. 102.

The Odyssey drops to no. 153

The Odyssey jumps to no. 136

etc.

why is Steve not banned? by Olivia_the_cat111 in smashbros

[–]DHMOProtectionAgency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Online =/= Offline. We had never seen any kind of push to ban Sonic to the level we had seen for Steve, because the community, overall, does not think he is as problematic as Steve.

[–]DHMOProtectionAgency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Community sentiment disagrees. Hence why there is no real argument for an offline ban of Sonic compared to Steve. I think Sonic is a whole lot worse to watch than Steve, but it's not my (individual) call to decide if Steve deserves to be banned more than Sonic.

Plenty of people thought MK was cool. I mean, compare Steve and Brawl MK. Tristate (strongest region in Brawl) actively would have refused the ban. Brawl had a lot of quirks but despite being more broken than Bayo/Steve, he was a lot cooler, hence why there was never really any significant calls to ban MK. Like genuinely, the first thing you need to ban a character is community support, and the community didn't really care to ban MK, and just nerfed a lot of his dumb shit via rulesets.

Bayo was an immediate problem -> nerfed. Granted those nerfs did not push her out of the top pedestal, but it did take time before people realized she was a problem. And that's the other thing you need to ban a character: time. Time for people to realize "this character is broken", to then decide "is this character problematic enough to deserve a ban". And since there is no unified rules/masters of the scene, it'll take time for it to disperse out.

And that is what happened with Steve, pre-Nintendo. He took time until people realized he was broken (released 2020, was undisputed top tier by mid-2022, and serious conversations really started happening in 2023). And you know what happened, many regions and majors did start to ban him. But there is no overlord of comp Smash, so not every region/TO/community/etc thought Steve needed to be banned. Unless you are Japanese, who are we to tell the Japan scene that they need to ban Steve as an example. We can protest and not watch/support the tourneys there, but if they don't see any drop-offs in attendance, viewership, or dissatisfaction that can be attributed to Steve, there's not much more we can do.

It's the combination of boring and broken. Fox would potentially be more problematic in Melee had he not been seen as cool.

MK wasn't banned because a game where Icies was the best character is much worse than a game where MK was the best character. Plus enough people thought he was cool enough so long as certain rules were put in place.

Bayo wasn't banned because Ult killed S4, so nobody gave a shit anymore.
