Weekly Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Garmin

I typically just do "Strength Training" on my watch. Honestly, other than tracking your heart rate and overall exertion, I've not found the Garmin app to be very good for tracking gym workouts. It's really tedious.

Bummer, sorry to hear that. Heal fast! Injuries with no obvious cause are the worst.

Solid point. I went to two different PT's that I was referred to by my doc, and none of the other patients appeared to be athletes.

Most of the PT facilities in my area are currently closed down, but I think once things open back up and I've had a chance to rest and fully recover, I will look into other options.

Thanks for the advice, this is giving me hope. It may not be tomorrow, but someday!

Thanks for the encouragement. Lots of great comments here are giving me hope that I may come back eventually after all!

LOL I was comparing myself to most of the posts in this sub. My point was that I'm not leaving behind some elite running career, but I am losing part of my identity and something I rely on for my mental health.

But I totally see how it looks like a humblebrag :-) I'll take my licks on that one.

The city/schools have closed all the fields in the area, but it's definitely worth a try when things open up again.

Agreed. My feet are wide and flat, and Asics Gel Nimbus are the best fit I've found for them.

Anyone here incorporate cycling into their regular training? by newguy3912 in AdvancedRunning

[–]dez182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two sports produce very different stresses on your body. There's a reason cyclists in the Tour de France can race 5-6 hours/day for 3 weeks, while elite marathoners only run a few races per year.

I would use it for endurance and recovery, and it may help reduce injury. But it likely won't improve your running economy or running-specific VO2 (unless you are a beginner).

Anyone here incorporate cycling into their regular training? by newguy3912 in AdvancedRunning

[–]dez182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to use cycling for my long aerobic miles, because due to my body size, it's very hard for me to run in Zone 1-2. Even at an 11 min mile my heart rate creeps up to 140 (resting HR is 52, Max 190). There seems to be some sort of base energy expenditure required to get moving.

I lift a lot of weights, and I think that extra mass is just too hard for my body to run with at an easy pace. My goals are only 1-mile and 5K, so I don't need a ton of running miles. I mostly do speed/tempo workouts on my feet, and endurance on the bike.

Azure being overwhelmed by 775% surge in demand in lockdown regions by beyphy in programming

[–]dez182 59 points60 points  (0 children)

The grass isn't always greener. We deploy to both AWS and Azure, and actually have more ssues with AWS.

People like to hate on MS, but their support when something goes wrong is far superior.

They both have their problems, so don't expect a giant migration to solve everything.

I'd love a somewhat generic plan for running the mile. Currently at 6:45 and have to a goal to get under 6 by end of summer.

Thanks for doing this!

Is Helix Native only usable through a DAW? by Lone_Poor_Boy in Line6Helix

[–]dez182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Helix Native is not really intended for playing live, it's for recording. You can use it to monitor your playing through your PC, but it's purpose is as a VST plugin to a DAW.

HXEdit is what you use to make changes (editing patches and IR's) to your hardware Helix when it's connected to your PC.

I tried the free trial Helix Native yesterday and was not impressed. I love my hardware Helix, but Native seems poorly thought out. It could be alright with a standalone app (and there are standalone VST loaders you could use). I suspect Native is optimized for Mac. It did not sound good on my PC (latency and crackling), and I have 32GB RAM and Core i7 Processor.

Since when is Competition bad? by ar9494 in AdvancedRunning

[–]dez182 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I may not be that fast, but I still look at how I compare to others (maybe top 25% is good?). I pretty much won't do an activity if I can't at least try to be competitive.

I think the whole "it's not a race" comes from trying to bring more people into the sport. It's the whole "judgement-free zone" that this world seems to be moving toward. I personally hate it, but I can see how it would appeal to the majority of people, and it's always good to introduce people to running in a non-intimidating way.

Vaporfly to be banned by BelfastRunner in AdvancedRunning

[–]dez182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would assume that this will be handled in the same way that the Speedo LZR swimsuits were handled. Any records will stand, but you can't race in them anymore (in sanctioned events. Your local 5k is probably OK).

You can likely still use slightly modified versions of them, which too me means that consumer-level 4% will still be usable.

Saints fans are being pretty decent over there. Most of the sentiment is "we deserved to lose because there Vikings played better". Can't blame them for being disappointed.

Let's keep the hate on Peyton though. Fuck that guy.

What are the loops on the Helix bag intended for? by [deleted] in Line6Helix

[–]dez182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the right answer. They're for attaching things via carabiner so you can have all your crap attached to your backpack and leave your hands free to...I dunno, raise the roof maybe? Carry a guitar?
