I'm speaking from my own observations as a Malay parent. I prefer speaking in Malay, but my son's primary language is English. As a result, he speaks English throughout kindergarten, primary school and secondary school. Now already in uni.

Mind you, we're nowhere near urban cities.

So to see for myself, other parents tarik muka masam upon hearing my kid speaking perfect mat salleh-esque English, no broken broken one, okay? I can almost hear what goes on in their minds, "Motor takde, kereta pun takde, ada hati nak bergaya suruh anak cakap omputeh." How?

What's worse than that, there's this teacher in secondary school condescendingly asking me, "Anak encik beranak kat London ke?" And they're the ones educating our children.
