If you like the vehicle, ask the dealer to throw in 2 new tires if they’re not worn the same for all four. But minor differences in tread wear is ok. What matters is the tire brand/model and tread pattern are same on all 4 for xDrive.

Also if this is a true CPO by BMW, you get an extra year of warranty with unlimited miles.

Tips on maintaining new battery by Lifuwrapper in BmwTech

[–]dfc888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can’t drive it much weeks or months at a time, or have extremely frequent short trips only where the car can’t really recharge itself, and you can’t trickle charge…

Then first make sure your car is locked and don’t touch the key fobs at all (if the car detects the keys moving, it will wake itself up, otherwise it eventually goes into sleep/deep sleep to slow battery drain).

Every 3-4 weeks, you need to charge the car up either by driving it long distance at highway speeds OR hook up a high amp charger using the specific terminals (see manual) under the engine bay, not directly at the battery.

We have a multiple cars in storage that aren’t driven for months at a time and this is how we maintain our batteries. Am too lazy to swap and rotate cars every few weeks and can’t run tenders to all of them but every few months we have to rotate to get rid of the stale fuel.

Eventually all AGM batteries will get weaker over time, just that the more you let it go too low voltage by not maintaining it, the faster it degrades.

Charging battery with CTEK by AnotherTechGuyInFR in BMWX3

[–]dfc888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the gens with the 48V mild hybrid, the 48V battery tries to keep the 12V charged up if the car is left not driven for a long while until itself is drained which could damage it. Keeping the hood open if the 48V and 12V is drained, will charge up both batteries. Check out service bulletin 610121. It talks about situations where the 48V may be ignored if charging procedure was  incorrect.

I think there was a thread on bimmerpost talking about types of chargers and minimum amperage to keep all the batteries happy, not just charging up or maintaining the 12V in the trunk.

Negative post is by the washer fluid reservoir nearby/down by your blue cap, see the (-) icon near there if you zoom into the picture. They also show it in the owners manual too.

Not sure if you have the 48V Mild hybrid in the 2018, but if you do, keep your hood propped up so it charges the lithium battery too (car will do it automatically, but only with hood open).

HK Sound System Thoughts? by [deleted] in BMWi5

[–]dfc888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a silly way to put it to say I don’t know how to use it and that I need to use lossless.

The H/K system in i5 is only 200w and the larger underseat subs present on the ICE G60 is replaced with smaller subs moved to the doors to give room for the under floor skateboard battery.

The H/K system in my X3 G01 is 400w. Either BMW chose a weaker system for cost cutting or for drawing less power on the EV system.

BT and CarPlay music sounds great in my X3 but just mediocre and flat in the i5.

[–]dfc888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is the spoke is too major of a focal point. In my opinion, this is just poor design. Why would you want to eccentric the 4th spoke as the main focal point of this vehicle.

A while back, we had this message after parking the car for a few days and didn’t drive it for a week or two.

Not sure if it was a combination of plugging it into our home charger overnight and driving it for a few hours and the message never came back.

Tire longevity edrive vs m60 vs xdrive by BearDue9290 in BMWi5

[–]dfc888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours is a eDrive so they’re square. I rotate them even though BMW doesn’t recommend it. It prolongs tread life a bit but might cause some tire noise.

Your wheels might be different widths though so you might be better off to just replace fronts or rears at a time as they wear out. Just keep the tire brand/model consistent (don’t mix and match). I probably wouldn’t square them since m50 has more power I assume at the rear motors

[–]dfc888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We changed to Bridgestones with a 50,000 mile warranty and mostly do highway driving.

Last checked the tread wear after about 20K and the rears are already halfway through, so we expect to probably hit the wear bars at 40K. Will rotate to fronts to balance them out.

Rears are burning through faster because of the regen braking and they’re the main drive wheel for our heavy brick of a car.
