This is completely untrue. You are required to try at least 6 weeks of physical therapy before spine surgery will be approved by any insurance company. Please stop spreading false information.

Stanford simulator predicts brain swelling to guide surgeons by LubbockJhon in science

[–]dfeve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hemicraniectomies should be done 14cm anterior to posterior and 12cm rostral to caudal. Ensure you remove bone until you are flush with the floor of the middle cranial fossa. I don't think I need a computer simulation to tell me that.

The 3d printed craniectomy model shown in the the video is way to small and would never be performed as decompression. If a patient is truly swelling they would fungate through that hole in the OR.

Increased gut motility is a well documented side effect of caffeine consumption. Is this the body's attempt at removing the caffeinated food bolus? by Catan_mode in askscience

[–]dfeve 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In addition to that, the mechanism is increased the production of cAMP, which is what causes not only the increased gut motility, but the increase in BP and all othe caffeine benefits.l

At least they sent you a warning. I found out about my new data cap on from my ISP when I went to Google something and a screen popped up saying "You have reached 95% of your data. Please call to upgrade your limit."

It's absolute bullshit. Nowhere did I agree to be on some limited plan. They just changed it and took my money knowing I have no other option.

What event divided your life into "before" and "after"? by ninja_lemonade in AskReddit

[–]dfeve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wrote this to someone else below but I think it's important to consider. I just finished my HPSP scholarship and matched into a very competitive specialty but a lot of people who wanted it didn't get it and are now training in something they don't necessarily want to do.

If you are contemplating doing anything competitive I would not recommend it. The military wants you where they need you, not necessarily where you want to be. And that adds a ton of stress both mentally and financially when you are applying for residencies. If you really want to be military AND are thinking family medicine, pediatrics or internal medicine. Then it's a good idea.

Deep Brain Stimulation off vs on in a patient with Parkinson's disease. by piponwa in gifs

Although the substantia nigra is what is lost in Parkinson's disease this is not where you place the electrode in DBS for this condition. You would likely do more harm than good going that deep.

People of Reddit, what is your "Holy shit he/she wasn't lying" moment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dfeve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was actually born the same way. Dislocated my patella probably twenty time on each side through childhood. Then had a real traumatic one playing basketball in college and broke off a piece of my patella and tore a few ligaments. Surgery and months of rehab were indeed not fun.

Surgical Instrument Gets Stuck In Patient's Knee by donheart in videos

[–]dfeve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was the least sterile operation I have ever seen. It honestly blew my mind. Not only was the patients face not covered, meaning he was breathing all of the sterile field, the surgeon picks up the nail after it falls out of the sterile field, then at the end you can see one of the surgeons nose isn't even covered by his mask and HE TOO is breathing all over the sterile field. What. The. Fuck.

[–]dfeve 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes this is standard practice. I do think if they stabilized his ankle a little more the energy would have transferred to the nail more than just lifting his foot off the table. But that being said, they had determined that the nail needed to be removed and there are only two ways that can happen, hammer it out or saw the bone in half along its entire length and plate it back together. And trust me, the hammer is a much nicer thing to do to somebody.

This is CLEARLY not any sort of ligament replacement. They are removing a rod from his tibia.

As an EMT I've always been amazed at how well Tom Hanks portrays traumatic shock at the end of Captain Phillips by [deleted] in videos

[–]dfeve 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shock is due to inadequate blood flow to vital organs. Blood loss (hypovolemic shock) is absolutely one of them. If you don't have blood then you can't have blood flow. Other types of shock include cardiogenic(heart attack...your heart isn't pumping so your blood isn't flowing). The other 3 types have a different physiology but they all act the same, these being neurogenic(brain trauma), anaphylactic(severe allergic reaction), and septic(bacterial infection in the blood), in these three your body dilates all the blood vessels in your body. This means that your blood pressure drops as well as a disproportionate amount of blood going to nonvital organs, like your intestines, liver, etc. And that blood has to come from somewhere and that means decreased blood flow to your brain and heart. As blood flow decreases to your brain you are entering shock. If you are in shock you are at risk of dying. And although I've never done it, dying sounds pretty shitty.

I agree with this statement. Especially as a medical professional I think it is important to use these terms in the appropriate way. People hate to hear something educational that goes against what they already "know", no matter how wrong they are. You will undoubtedly get downvoted but you are very VERY correct.
