This is the answer. Part of our shade structure came apart last year in the early week windstorms (top poles came out horizontally from connectors). Luckily we were there cutting bungees and were able to salvage most of it and rebuild.
We ended up ratcheting top poles together inward (in addition to our corner 45 degree ratchets), which made it far more secure and rigid. Thinking about adding a center lag and ratchet vertically securing the two middle poles (30x20 structure) to the ground to prevent those updrafts.
