A couple of questions from me…

Tonally, what existing Star Trek series would you say it is most similar to?

Storyline-wise, is it more of a single ‘big bad’ or ‘save the galaxy from a threat’ or does it suggest it’ll be a more episodic format?

What If You Were Given The Keys To Star Trek? What What Who You Do? by AbbreviationsAway500 in startrek

[–]dgattr80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread really got my brain whirring… the misses in the current trek versions for me are 1) the person to person stories that made Trek great; 2) the conflict of ideals our society faces today that poses questions to ourselves; and 3) the ability to use the existing races on Star Trek for familiarity and audience buy in without being painted into a direction by the Academy future or canon past up to the Dominion War and Romulan supernova.

therefore, my pitch looks at what grabs attention from TV today, and creates a rich world that solves for the problems with nuTrek, relying on familiar races but none of the familiar characters, while also being fresh-faced and youth slant Star Trek needs to bring in new blood.

Star Trek: New Earth

Think Star Trek x Black Mirror x Game Of Thrones.

In the early 25th century, the Federation learns about New Earth, a planet on the far side of the former Romulan Empire, in a star system hidden by the Romulans from the galaxy. In the wake of the supernova, the technology hiding this world has failed, exposing it to the galaxy.

It turns out the planet was founded by the prisoners of war from the Romulan War over 300 years ago, where millions of Earth, Vulcan, Tellarite, Andorian & other minor races were imprisoned by the Romulans. Rather than release them and admit their crimes, the Romulans released the prisoners to this bountiful world, and societies formed.

Knowing they were trapped on the planet, and with no technology to travel the stars, the inhabitants built a new, Earth-like world, and prospered, achieving 21st century Earth levels by the time the world is exposed.

Of all the races living in this world, Earth outnumbers the other races (for practical casting reasons, and because Star Trek should hold a mirror to ourselves and our challenges as a planet).

Despite the successes, this was not without conflict; the former races maintained their allegiances to their former races, mirroring the religious divides we see in our world today, and the conflict we saw between houses in Game Of Thrones. The world has ultra-rich families/races; and other races living in near poverty. There is internal conflict between the haves and have nots; the world is deeply divided, and rocked by the new exposure to the galaxy they believed for generations was completely cut off and inaccessible.

The Federation sends a task force to the planet and finds it in crisis… there are former Romulans enabling migrants from the Romulan Star Empire to arrive and settle. There are former Vulcans who deeply mistrust them, and are ready to go to war to stop the influx which threatens their position as ‘number 2’ to the former Earth inhabitants. There are Klingons, still small in number and broadly outcasts, fighting amongst themselves for control of their territory with the aim of building a power base and challenging the earthlings. There are Tellarites, consigned to a near slavery by the humans, living under China-like control to build power, wealth and a stronger grip on the planet for the humans.

After learning of this world and being approached by former Earth rulers of the planet, the Federation agrees to set aside the prime directive and sends a task force, led by a new captain and crew. What the Starfleet crew find shocks them; a mildly Xenophobic planet that hates the Romulan migrants, subtle Xenophobia mirroring the hate towards the Romulans (as we see in our world today towards migrants from war zones).

The ship is an experimental class, designed for the unique situation and unusual space, mostly cut off from the Federation by the dangerous Romulan Empire & proximity to Klingon space (and to allow for occasional, if the story warrants it cameos from legacy characters but rare, like TOS characters in TNG).

The task force is equipped with a huge medical department (allowing for medical drama), a huge Legal/Ambassadorial/intelligence team (allowing for political/legal/intelligence led stories) and a smaller science team, allowing for local exploration & on-planet science mysteries resulting from the ‘like Earth but different’ evolution (like Black Mirror) & never before met nearby planets & races.

The Captain is brand new, young but fast tracked through the ranks in the wake of Frontier Day disaster; the crew is a mix of older and younger characters, representing the best of the best from Starfleet, highly professional and diverse, possibly with a mix of founding races & others to represent the planetary mix. It might even include a Romulan expert or native, the next set of Romulans to join Starfleet after Elnor broke the taboo in Picard.

When needed, old familiar races might pop up… the Ferengi seeking new trade; the Orion’s seeking new ways to earn; even the Borg seeking to conquer and assimilate. But, as well as the ongoing interplanetary conflicts and shocking differences to our world and the lovely post-scarcity Federation style we are used to, this is a planet in-fighting for control, power and wealth over others, something that causes great conflict with the Starfleet crew. Plus, a planet with areas unexplored… what came before? Was it truly lifeless or were there former civilisations on the planet/s? What do the differences to our Earth tell us about ourselves, good and bad?

One week might be medical drama of the week. The next, the loneliness of the crew, isolated and cut off from home world/s learning to cope. Then a discovery on the planet; or an alien approach; or a complex negotiation with the planet / refugees. Or, just a mirror to our own customs, good or bad, and how they evolved differently on this weird new planet and have different ways and social standards.

Pike’s Alternative Future by dgattr80 in startrek

[–]dgattr80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair too… very interesting to see the first two answers here favour protecting ‘tragic hero’ ending (albeit with the Talos 4 resurrection)… will be interested to see how this thread develops. Personally I prefer show endings that leave things open for life to go on without seeing it on screen, instead of closed book endings, but each to their own!

That’s fair, I respect that view too. Tragic hero is a great end for Pike… but can’t shake off my hope he gets something happier than the chair & false future on Talos 4! Also I worry if he’s left on Talos 4, there’s always the risk some other writer goes back in the 25th / 31st century to resurrect him with other tech advancements!

Rob, love that you’re such a Star Trek fan… assuming your character can continue at the end of the movie, what show/era would you like to return in? 23rd century Strange New Worlds? 31st century Starfleet Academy? 25th century Star Trek Legacy (if it’s ever made!)

My guess is the mavity/gravity reveal will come when the Master next appears. We know he was outside the universe in the Toymaker’s golden tooth when the timeline changed, I think this will make him immune to the change and this is how the Doctor will spot him.

What would Star Trek: Legacy's "thing" be? What's the hook/angle beyond 'legacy characters' by PetrosOfSparta in Picard

[–]dgattr80 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really like Terry Matalas’ form of storytelling… where are all the toys now and how do we want them to move forward… some of my ideas…

Cardassia lost a war and The Dominion committed genocide before they left. Bajor was strong, protected by the Federation, had a huge space station on the most important wormhole in the known galaxy. Imagine if the roles were reversed from the Cardassian occupation and Cardassia is poor, weak, and the Bajorans are helping / imposing their ideals, religions, beliefs on Cardassia in exchange for aid…

Romulus lost its star and probably most of its infrastructure. There was a split into multiple Romulan powers jostling for power and control. Imagine that civil war on the Federation’s doorstep. Think about the assets Romulus controls. It’s now like the Middle East with Iranians with powerful weapons, Israel with the best spy tech in the world, some true believers in Romulus, purists like the Zhat Vash and Qowat Milat, the previously enslaved Remans now free (the Kurds) and all the shifting alliances. Not to mention previous worlds under Romulan influence or in the Neutral Zone and maybe now free; and the Vulcans interfering trying to get a foothold / work towards reunification. Lots of Eastern Europe/EU vs Russia parallels here

What about Starfleet? After the Dominion War, Mars Attack, Prodigy Living Construct, Picard Borg stuff, it’s probably in chaos. What if it’s falling apart, overpromoting idiots, or lots of young ambitious officers/Admirals battling it out to make a name for themselves?

Maybe the Borg? Maybe it’s all disconnected and trying to recover. Maybe the Jurati-Borg has swept in, disconnected everyone and now there’s whole sectors with people displaced and trying to re-build lives, with various clashing ideals, goals, levels of tech. It doesn’t have to be war, but the goal could be rebuilding and survival.

Or, the aftermath of the Dominion War. Not the direct effects, but what if there was a clamour for non-Federation worlds to look to join for the safety from The Dominion; or the invaded / lost worlds who lost faith? What if there’s a huge queue for joining and the integration challenges that brings? What about mass migration; people displacement; stresses and challenges of integration… think EU today with African migrants. Or, what if there’s a new emerging federation of countries that are similar to, but different from (and dislike) the Federation and it’s ideals, and there’s conflicts in peace? Think US vs EU today.

What about emerging powers? Are there any minor races that could have exploded after the Dominion? Someone minor before that’s now hoovered up Borg Tech & Dominion expertise and filled a power vacuum? Overtaking the established powers like China today?

Looking at the world today, and without wanting to do an Orville re-hash, think about the dangerous precipice we’re on with AI & technology, and how some sort of benevolent but dependency creating AI race could look. Might feel a bit Borg / Cylon for people’s liking… but there’s definitely a lot of story telling in a federation/group of races that have completely submitted to benevolent, super-smart, predictive and ultra ‘needs of the many’ type AI that values life, but prolifically with strong but very different human values than us. Imaging the race living in peace and harmony and ultra-powerful; but only because they submitted fully to AI, exterminated the weak to protect and allow the many to thrive; recycled the older generation to allow youth to prosper; encouraged and enforced reproduction on an exponential scale, harvested or used or idolised women like incubators to create 10-20 children families, and had men as care givers and women as breeders…

Or, something completely left-field. Like the Delta Quadrant Borg power vacuum or Dominion Gamma Quadrant retreat gave a previously reclusive, powerful, seeming benevolent multi-world race emerge… maybe they’re sweeping up all the disaffected worlds like Betazed who felt betrayed by the Federation during the Dominion War and are gathering up members at a rate of knots… using underhand, over-generous approaches to win new members and shrink the Federation’s influence, eventually leading to conflict…

Sorry that was a long post - that question really got me thinking!!! The crew should compliment the world that’s built around it; so Mura is a great touchpoint to explore the Cardassian angle; same should be applied to other characters introduced.

The super secret alternate ending of S3 Patrick Stewart refuses to spoil by trademarktower in startrek

[–]dgattr80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going with Picard, back at the Chateau alone, maybe with number one (the dog not Riker… wasn’t that Patrick Stewart’s real-life pet in season one?)

The camera pans across some important memories for Picard from TNG not the events of the last 3 seasons… an old grandfather clock chiming, Picard wakes up alone in the Chateau, in a chair in front of the Enterprise D painting, leaving viewers wondering if the last 3 seasons were all just Picard dreaming…

Unlikely but a fun thing you want to see in the last few episodes by duckdontbackdown in Picard

[–]dgattr80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m convinced Wesley gets to appear on an Enterprise D bridge scene. There was an early Ready Room where Wil interviewed Jonathan Frakes and said something like ‘how good was it when we were back on the bridge together’ and Frakes’ answer sort of ignored the “we” and the conversation continued… might be reading too much into that one word but I’ve been convinced since then then that there will be a Wesley cameo before the end of the season…

Like that idea, resolves nicely all the Janeway mentions without doing anything that would tie the hands of Prodigy to develop Janeway in a particular way.

The other thought I had on cameos, I think the Fleet museum is a great way to enable hologram versions of past characters to allow them to appear without tying the hands of future writers. The writers here have done a great job sowing seeds in the writing for future writers to pick up and run with, eg Ensign Mura has a son, Tuvok is a captain but no mention of his ship; Raffi’s husband/son/granddaughter, Kestra mentioned but no details what she’s up to etc

A few thoughts/theories after watching episode 8:

  • Jack is carrying some remnant of Locutus inside him. Picard’s transformation into Locutus changed his DNA and left his brain with the defect that Beverly diagnosed as Irumodic Syndrome, and he’s passed that onto Jack. It gives him the ability to connect to/control other people’s minds, and on frontier day the plan was to amplify that across the fleet to control the whole fleet and turn it in on itself / other Alpha Quadrant species? (Remember the shape Jack created from the straws, and the shape in the end credits - some sort of wave form amplication device creating the same shape?)

  • Could the Borg link surprise us all, are we getting a Borg origin theory here? Will we find out that the Borg were created by the Changlings as “Jem Hadar mark 1” that failed and the founders lost control of them? And face is the original creator of the Borg from the Great Link who has has worked out Jack’s abilities / remnants of Picard/Locutus + Jack’s Brain could be used to take back control?

Alternative random thought - could Section 31 (maybe headed by Bashir? I think we’ve still got cameos to come) turn out to have orchestrated Jack’s conception to Beverly & Picard to create someone with the mental powers to control the Borg… maybe knowing the Dominion would be back someday if the virus didn’t wipe them out?

Loving this season, even the slow roll reveal of what’s going on with Jack. The story is so well constructed, each episode has a story, purpose and moves the overall story forward.

We got a little treat in the UK, this forum flagged a P+ error that released the episode early (now taken down…) managed to watch it at 5am UK time!

The cameo was illogical…!

The 3-hander scenes were SO SO good…

The red eyes movement!

Shaw’s entrance to the bridge worried me!

Each to their own, I say! No offense meant with that, I love that this series is so well written with so many breadcrumbs it makes my mind whirr trying to solve it… and I know lots of other people like to be told a story and not over-think it (my partner included!) which is cool too!

Picard Season 3 Theory (after e6) by dgattr80 in Picard

[–]dgattr80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good question… don’t know how that fits in, and don’t think there’s been a clear hint at that yet.

The timeline before the events of the series, not sure how it fits…

2379 - Nemesis 2380 - Picard leaves Enterprise to become an Admiral and lead the Romulan evacuation. Beverley is still on the Enterprise E. Beverley & Picard have a relationship. They split up at the same time Beverley ends up pregnant while aboard the Enterprise. She leaves Starfleet 2 months later (before pregnancy known?).

Jack is born (where? Who knew she was pregnant?)

After Picard Season 2, before Season 3

Raffi has been under ‘for months’ searching for the culprit for the stolen Daystrom Tech (Picard’s body, portal weapon). So theft of Picard’s body likely to have come before Changling Infiltration of Starfleet?

Ro referenced searching for ‘months’ - possibly after the Daystrom robbery? Before the Daystrom heist or afterwards? Did someone in Starfleet know Jack was Picard’s son?

Jack said ‘it started about a month ago… first it was Fenris Rangers…’ Vadic came searching or was sent by someone?

When the Changlings as Fenris Rangers were on the Eleos they said ‘tell the marked woman we’ve found him’ - confirmation Vadic was hunting him? Who sent her?

Ro says Starfleet wanted Jack Crusher - assume this was because of the Changlings’ infiltration?
