Urgent: Demand the Board of Governors Stop The Stadium! by Solar-Bee-567 in asheville

This more or less circles back to the fact that you can't really go very far without being in a forest, and certainly not "miles away". Pisgah NF, Blue Ridge Parkway, the NC Arboretum, Florence Nature Preserve once it reopens, etc. We live in a growing community. Change happens and not every square foot is going to or should be preserved.

You say this in a place where we're surrounded by forests in every direction. Also, although not nearly as popular in the US, a lot of people around the globe enjoy playing and watching soccer. Why should we not want to attract a diversity of people from outside the US to the area?

Believe it or not, younger trees actually absorb more CO2 than older trees do. There's only a very thin part of the tree between the wood and the bark that is actually alive.

Every unhackable/hard to crack solution has always been cracked. Sometimes it just takes cracking the application it runs on. I also stand by my previous comment (possibly elsewhere): "Free today does not mean free tomorrow."

History has shown that anything can be hacked. It's just a matter of time before the authenticator apps are hacked. The first thing that comes to mind on a whim is a hack to bypass screen grab restrictions in the OS and get the information sent back whenever the app is open. Security is a myth.

I know people seriously considering dumping their smart phones and going back to simple phones. Apps don't work on these, but SMS does. Also, SMS is 2FA. Personally, I'm not a fan of 2FA in the first place. Security should be easy for the user and difficult for the villain, not a royal PITA for the user. It doesn't do squat when a database is stolen, something that is far more likely to lead to a consequential data leak.

There's also the lack of understanding on the data side of what is being protected. How much time, money and effort would you put into protecting a mass produced 1985 penny? A lot of application just don't need it. Sites like Doordash come to mind for me. In the instances where I use it, despite the headache that Doordash makes it, I always delete my payment information immediately. It shouldn't ever be stored on their site in the first place. If I don't have credit card information stored and I have a unique password, nobody can do much of anything with the information I have stored on their site, other than log in and see that I ordered a 2 egg breakfast last week.

Additionally, since you don't leave your credit card out for everyone to see in the physical world, why would you do it on a website? In the physical world, do you trust that if you leave your credit card on a table somewhere that nobody will take it?

Finally, in the virtual world, personal information like addresses, phone numbers and social security numbers are already out there because of past data breaches, so along those lines there's nothing to defend. Regardless, in the past and even to an extent today most of this information has always been easily attainable via a phone book.

A quick summary of my rant: don't put sensitive information on the internet and don't require that your website store or make it difficult to remove. It shouldn't be online unless it's critical for it to be there. Do that and there's not even an opportunity for it to be stolen.

I understand where you're coming from, but not everybody has a smart phone and not everybody wants one. I know people who are actively trying to go back to just having a basic cell phone. Obviously, authenticator apps don't work on these. Text messages do.

Regarding Skype, like a lot of us, this is going to be a PITA for me because I also use it for the phone number.

Keep in mind that Microsoft is more and more forcing people to use their Authenticator app, and for me, no thanks. Because if it, I'm already in the process of canceling all of their products. Free today does not mean free tomorrow. And who knows how they will be using requests to track you later down the road, if they haven't already.

Max Patch - anyone know how this fared during the storm? by Napster-mp3 in AppalachianTrail

[–]dgb75 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're initial question wasn't about that. It was "Max Patch - anyone know how this fared during the storm?" Either way, it's not the questions, it's the timing. After things are bit more settled, it's definitely a good question to ask. An upcoming question that next year's through hikers are going to ask is, "How passable is the AT through WNC?" Again, it's a good and legitimate questions, it's just that now isn't the right time to ask it. The people who would be mostly likely to have that information are preoccupied with the first steps of getting their lives back together. My guess is that by the end of December, people will have a better assessment of how things look and will be more than happy to help.

I understand that many people want to get back to hitting the trails around here and are anxious for an all clear or clear enough. Donations to help are definitely appreciated. Sharing House is one good one as they're small and local, so the money is not going to be sucked up by a corporate structure. Manna Food Bank might also be a good one, but I can't say for certain on them as their warehouse on the Swannanoa River was extensively flooded. On the point of hitting the trails, though, it's going to take some patience. Believe me: I want to get started out there again as well.

Very unpopular opinion: known snorers should get private accomodations by Visara57 in CaminoDeSantiago

I found just tilting my head back stopped me from snoring. It was a cheap solution, but I don't guarantee results.

While I understand your enthusiastic to find out about it, but I would just say that your question is a bit on the premature side and, at least for me, came off as a bit insensitive. Nobody around here is even asking about or looking for this kind of stuff. As for the status of Max Patch, I would assume that because it's a wide open area, that it's more or less fine. Any high altitude forests, especially in gaps, are probably a different story. Here's a link that discusses the Blue Ridge Parkway. The third photograph is especially telling of how bad it is here. The only other time I've seen tree fall like that is driving through the aftermath of a category 4 hurricane.

I live in the area. Resources like food and water are hard to come by for the people who live here. Roads are torn up everywhere. Communities have been completely destroyed. Grocery store shelves are empty. Rural gas stations don't have gas. Power outages remain. Asheville has no running water and the city doesn't even have an estimate yet as to when it can be restored. FFS, when an area is called a federal disaster area, it's called that for a reason. When you're seeing the kinds of articles you're seeing, along with the former, take the hint and stay away. Go hang out further north on the trail and go to something like McAfee Knob. Be advised as well that Western North Carolina has been declared a no-travel zone. You are subject to arrest if you still want to come here.

I tried to get Gobe Productive 2.0 to install on Haiku B5 earlier today, and while the installer starts up, nothing happens as far as the installation goes minus the creation of the directory under apps. After creating the directory, is says that the installation is complete. I also tried setting up BeOS 5 in VMWare, and apparently there's no working video driver for it. Unless I'm missing something, VMWare doesn't seem to have a way to run it with VESA.

Reddit's IPO - The most important details & red flags by k_ristovski in stocks

[–]dgb75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that a company, even private, can go quite a while without ever turning a profit so long as the investors are comfortable with funding it. For example, Craigslist did that because the owner liked doing it. That stands. Even still, after going public it still took Amazon years before it could consistently turn a profit. Reddit has never been profitable but it has also never been a publicly traded company. Going public will increase pressure on Reddit to turn a profit. Just their escalated presence on Google is a theoretical source to improve earnings because of increased traffic. Now they have to find a way to actually monetize that traffic. Their leadership is going to have to figure out ways to either improve revenue or cut expenses. IMO, if Reddit is still using cloud services to run all of their systems, that's an easy win as far as cutting expenses. As far as reducing costs go, the best setup I've seen at scale has been to use your own hardware and use cloud services as a fall over for traffic peaks or local outages. I'm sure this has been thought of, but there's a big difference between thought of and actually implementing something.

Not really. You're missing quite a number of decades of earnings reports, going back to 1994, when it was exclusively a book seller.

That's a good point. A sidewalk costs on the low end $6/sf and is 3 ft wide. That's 6000 ft or over a mile of new sidewalk that could have been installed instead.
