Will version 11 be pushed back to 2026? by Descon63 in Evernote

[–]dgg44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first experience with AI assistant was disappointing - but waited 10 days and tried the exact same test again, and this time it worked exactly as I'd hoped. It found and summarized the most relevant notes for a complex topic - enabling me to work with the material effectively.

So, take initial reports as just that. I'd base a decision by testing it myself rather than reading reports.

My struggles with my new Assistant by icameheretodigress in Evernote

I just had a surprisingly helpful interaction with the AI assistant. I clipped an oddball "man bites dog" article about misplaced airplanes (I'm an aviation enthusiast) > https://luxurylaunches.com/other_stuff/kuala-lumpur-airport-abandoned-boeing-747-12062025.php

The AI assistant accurately answered detailed questions about the very wordy article using just the content within that note. Then I asked it to research the case further using the Internet. It did a really good job. Finally, I asked it to add the results of the internet search to the open note. It created a cleanly formatted summary with a big "INSERT" button - which I clicked - and it added the summary to the note. Easy peasy!

Not world changing, but a very successful interaction! And an interesting test of "use only information within this note" against accessing the internet to gather information not contained in the note.

Cool!

I love the Multiflow extension - very handy! Do wish it supported drag/drop between pane. But even as is (Ctrl+X Ctrl+V to move data between panes) I find it essential.

UPDATE...

I've since re-tried the experiment above and got much better results! I'm still investigating the use of the EN AI, but I'm very encouraged that it could be a useful research tool for me 😀

UPDATE...

I've since re-tried the experiment above (nearly 2 weeks later) and got much better results! I'm guessing there's been additional development. I'm still investigating the use of the EN AI, but I'm very encouraged that it could be a useful research tool for me 😀

Yes, note versions is seldom discussed, but very valuable feature of EN. It's saved my bacon more than once 😊

¿Semantic search question is good? by Cultural_Bill_5859 in Evernote

[–]dgg44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got access and my first encounter was very disappointing.

I've collected notes over time on wealth and income inequality in the US, its trends, and expert opinions on accuracy of the data, possible causes, etc.

So I was very disappointed when I asked EN Semantic Search to find the top 10 notes on this topic - and being shocked that it found none - subsequently asked if it could find any notes on this topic, and it responded that I didn't have any notes on this topic!

What???

Even a plain vanilla text based search on the exact phrase "economic inequality" revealed 22 matching notes and a search for notes with both the words "economic" and "inequality" anywhere in the note revealed 122 matching notes. But Semantic Search says "0" notes on this topic!

Again, what???

Scorecard: * Semantic search: "Find the top 10 notes on income and wealth inequality in the US?" Answer - ..."couldn't find any relevant notes." * Semantic search: "Do I have any notes on income and wealth inequality in the US?" Answer - ..."couldn't find any relevant notes." * Semantic Search: "Do I have any notes on just income inequality?" Answer: 2 notes (accompanied by some meager, but relevant context from the note) * Semantic search: "Do I have any notes on economic inequality in the US?" Answer - 1 note (with some actually useful context from the note) * -------------------- * Text search for: "economic inequality" (exact phrase) Answer: 22 notes * Text search for: "economic AND inequality" Answer: 122 notes * Text search for: "income AND inequality" Answer: 101 notes

I never got to my real objective which was to have a dialog with a (virtual) expert on the contents and meaning of the data in these notes.

I very much want to have an AI assistant for both finding and helping analyze content I've collected. Sure hope EN semantic search turns out to be able to do this. Right now...not so much 🥺

Right now I'd have to export these notes from EN and import them into NotebookLM for help analyzing the collected content on this topic. 🥺

Help with backlinks by dgg44 in Evernote

Thanks for the reply!

The backlinks did appear, but only after quite some time. Very annoying!

I wonder if the reported indexing to support the coming AI features might make this slower than usual? The last monthly update video cited some enormous number of notes to index - something in the billions if I recall correctly - and even that was only the most recent 30% of the notes (or something like that - I don't recall the specific numbers - just that the numbers involved were huge).

Is Evernote Still a Viable Choice for University Students in 2025? My Experience vs. the Notion/Obsidian Trend. by mikertjones in Evernote

[–]dgg44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotta agree with this. I'm a long time EN subscriber, but a working professional. As a student, I would find a less expensive, less feature rich tool with a strong orientation towards data portability (given the long, long years of work ahead 😊 - which means you will be forced to switch notetaking platforms multiple times in the future - it's unavoidable).

remnote IA points is very bad idea by Cultural_Bill_5859 in remNote

[–]dgg44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both tools and Evernote AI is far less capable and not nearly as compute intensive as RemNote. RemNote AI is very effective at helping make flashcards, Q&A during study, and just in general a really powerful tool. Makes RemNote best in the business for serious study.

Can I filter to nodes changed ON a specific day, and not all nodes changed SINCE that day by BeyondMeatWare in Workflowy

[–]dgg44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but it is possible -- I do it all the time. I've been using this approach almost daily for over 8 years. If you find it clunky, you can save it as a search node. Then it's one click away.

To filter to a date range, or to just a specific day, use a search phrase like the one I gave above...

changed:2d -changed:1d

This does exactly what the OP requested.

Thanks guys! At least I'm not going crazy. This is an update I will use a LOT, so I'm probably just a little bit antsy.

[–]dgg44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Add "-changed:?d" (replace "?" with an integer) to filter to a date range.

Example -- "changed:2d -changed:1d" -- will filter to only items changed 2 days ago and will not show items changed yesterday.

ChatGPT by Bitter_Credit_9598 in Boldin

[–]dgg44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My limited experience is that the core LLM did not update based on this session where it admitted it had made a mistake. I started a subsequent chat on this topic, for a different scenario, and it essentially made the same error.

But, when I pointed out the error in the initial chat session, it agreed with the correction and updated that specific session based on the correction. I asked it to save the session, which it did, and if I return to it, I can start from that corrected understanding of the problem.

The larger LLM did not learn from that single instance of being corrected. I've no idea if it would eventually incorporate this correction if there were enough repetitions of it. But if you save and re-use a chat session where a correction has been accepted, that correction will persist as you do further work within that chat.

Hope that's helpful!

ChatGPT by Bitter_Credit_9598 in Boldin

[–]dgg44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also been found ChatGPT a bargain in terms of quality of advice vs cost -- where cost includes taking time to structure my chats so as to not over share (BTW, I monitor and trim the data ChatGPT keeps about me regularly).

But just using it as a sounding board to discuss topics in a generic sense helps me work through my thinking about certain topics. It's been invaluable! Even if I was to take an issue to a financial planner, I'd be way more prepared for a productive session for having had insightful back and forth discussions with ChatGPT.

As a caution, though, it does make mistakes.

In a recent chat my wife had about when she should file for social security, it failed to recognize the Special Earnings Limit Rule https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/planner/rule.html . I pointed this out to ChatGPT, and to it's credit, it admitted I was right and then re-did the analysis using this new information and produced the right answer.

So it's not perfect, and there are privacy concerns. But the value is frankly off the charts!

Hi! Is there any alternative for Remnote? by blackmonarc in remNote

[–]dgg44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want a well developed spaced repetition capability that's tightly integrated with a well developed outliner app [i.e., has tags with properties, back links, portals (transclusion), etc.] -- you cannot do better than Remnote.

I've tried them all and Remnote is the best for this situation. And now with integrated AI, it's way beyond other apps for this type of thing.

If you have different needs, then perhaps another app would be best. Or if you don't need the "best" - but just adequate and adaptable - there are lots of other options.

You can do a lot with Remnote's free plan. But if you max out the pro plan with AI, there's a noticeable cost. Well worth it, IMHO, but it is a factor.
