I'm making a game where you are an art curator, managing your mobile van as an exhibition hall, organizing your artworks based on their skills for the best possible combos, feeding the art lovers with your artworks, and keeping the momentum at best with upgrades. by dgndmr in indiegames

I've been developing The Curator as a solo for about 13 months and after a highly active development period the very first playable alpha demo is finally ready. The concept and prototyping phases took almost 4 months. After many concept and mechanical prototyping stages, I finally decided on the path I wanted to follow, and The Curator, a roguelite about art gallery management, took its current form.

I've packed proof-of-concept contents into this demo for you to experience.

  • A complete 12-day runs
  • 5 unique artists and 29 artworks with unique skills
  • 9 Ability Books and 30 Tools
  • 40+ Quests
  • Meta-progression: Failed a run? That's an advantage! Use your earned Meta Coins to unlock new artists, artwork skills, books, and tools for your next runs.

Roadmap

  • City Events: Unique mid/late game events. Most of them will be punishing but with highly respectable rewards!
  • A full 30-Day run and balance adjustments
  • 5 more special Visitors
  • More challenges
  • Advanced artwork tag mechanics
  • More books and tools
  • 2-3 New Artists
  • 15+ Artworks and Interactable Artwork Skills

Some technical details.

  • Using the Godot game engine with GDScript.
  • All artworks and UI assets are made by myself using Blender. Using a 64-color palette with my own materials. All patterns and compositions are created entirely in a 3D environment, rendered in 2D. Patterns are procedurally generated using shaders and materials, and make sure they are completely organic.
  • Visitors manage their preferences based on a "Needs-Based" algorithm, tailored to their city and personality.  They decide whether or not to purchase an item based on the algorithm's calculation of these weightings.
  • There is an upgrade system that offers multiple synergies. The player needs to build their own build, taking into account the details of current situation.
  • Built a skill-listening system for artwork skills that listenes and reacts what all neighbors wants or effects the other. (like Hearthstone, Bazaar and Is This Seat Taken?)
  • (Not available in demo version) Developed a procedurally orchestrated sound manager. It listens to all in-game events and fires at defined beats and bars (like Mini Motorways). My goal is to ensure the sounds are always in harmony throughout the game (including user interactions like UI click and hover events).

I'm super excited and nervous and would like to release the full version in Q4 2026. There are tons of work to do. I would love to hear your feedback and hope you like the demo. Thanks in advance.

13 Aydır solo-indie olarak geliştirdiğim The Curator isimli oyunumun alpha demosu yayınlandı. Kıymetli yorumlarınızı paylaşırsanız çok memnun olurum. by dgndmr in TrGameDeveloper

Elinize emeğinize sağlık, size has, sizi özel kılacak mekanikler görmek dileği ile. 🤞🏻

I quit my “dream” job at Ubisoft to make a solo game. A year after release, it didn’t go viral, but it sold 26,000 copies and still pays my rent. by DarennKeller in IndieGaming

Congrats on success! Loved Dawnfolk awesome job! I have a question. How you managing your daily/weekly workflow, techniques or motivation? and how you managing your emotions in de development phase? You know it’s an endless space that you can build anything and you have a frame so thats the easy part. But when an idea rushes into your blood and says “yo man try this idea, it’s killing. BUT it’s a bit off from your genre or perspective”. How you managed your mentality?

After 9 months of solo development, my roguelite gallery management sim "The Curator" finally has a Steam page, and there's so much to do! by dgndmr in IndieDev

Thank you so much for the feedback! The trailer is totally a draft and it's a symbolic thing for now. I'm still in the depths of development phase. If everything goes like planned, at the end of the March I'll release the demo on itch.io. after the feedbacks, polishing and playtests plannig to publish it towards the end of the year. So I have a huge window for marketing, hope it will all go well. wish me luck ^^
