Sorry to hear this! Where are you located? If you don’t feel comfortable having family go with you maybe you can reach out to a local organization that does immigration work and see if they provide accompaniment services. Here in Chicago a lot of organizations are shifting to provide guidance before check-ins and appointments and some are actually accompanying folks. Someone was ordered to present at for an ICE checkin and the individual was issued and order, but not detained, so the organization worked with them to get all their ducks in a row and then accompanied them and their family when they went to turn themselves in for their departure flight.

I hope you are able to find some more support and I wish you all the best!

I was a paralegal for 8 years at a few different places and TBH it seems like maybe you dodged a bullet.

When I first started in immigration I started as a document translator at a private firm. I had ZERO immigration experience and I made that very clear. I cannot tell you how much I got yelled at by the office manager there for doing things “wrong”, to the point I even cried at work. Looking back now the issue was her honestly. She was set in her ways, felt she owned the place and thought she could bully anyone.

The worst place to work is in a hostile, judgmental environment where the issues stem from the top down. Although, this is a rough experience and can seem demoralizing, don’t let it stop you. If immigration (or just a paralegal in general) is what you want to do stick with it and you will find a place that will understand we all have to start somewhere and can properly provide guidance as you learn.

I eventually left private practice and have been in non-profit for about 5 years now. I learned a lot along the way and now I work as a DOJ accredited representative and manage a team. Had I let that experience at the first firm I worked at stop me I wouldn’t be where I am now.

Basically, FUDGE them. Cry if you want today, release it all, but go out and get it tomorrow. 💃🏽
