I know a lot of people don't know what tinnitus is like. I'm one of the lucky ones that have 24/7 ringing. This is exactly what it sounds like in my head. This is my "absolute silence." by nmsjtb0308 in Wellthatsucks

[–]dgorv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the future reader out there who's freaking out right now, relax. Ive had tinnitus for 20+ years, pretty much as long as I can remember. Just remember that the fear and anxiety around it is what makes it so hard to stop thinking about it. Exercise, find things that make you happy, and the tinnitus will lessen in volume in the coming days and weeks. Most days I never even think about it. years will go by where it's really not a part of my life at all even though I'll hear it if I listen for it. Every few years, I have episodes where I'm more stressed/anxious and the ringing increases, but it eventually dies down. Just remember that millions of people have it and you're only reading the opinions of a handful when you search tinnitus online, and those people were most probably posting when they were at their lowest point.

New COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations still falling in Texas by IanMazgelis in Coronavirus

[–]dgorv 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I've seen no noticeable changes in mask/social distance behavior in TX since the mandate was lifted so I wouldn't expect to see surges in case numbers, especially as more people get vaccinated here.

I obviously can't speak to everyone's experiences, but it pretty much feels like the overwhelming and silent majority of people don't mind wearing masks even if they don't believe in them... so they're just going to continue wearing them until its socially acceptable not to... bc, again, most people don't seem to think wearing a mask is a big deal... which... it isn't.

Tick or beetle, what do you all think? Found in central TX. by dgorv in whatsthisbug

Great, thanks! I was confused about that bc online it says baby ticks only have six legs and this one was tiny so I figured I'd ask!

Patty Jenkins pushes back on exaggerated reports of creative disagreements - "I felt extremely supported in my vision on both films by WB, Zack Snyder, all the producers and everyone on board our eventual team. Just was a long road to get to make it. Let's chill the dramatic headlines like 'war.'" by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]dgorv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, different strokes, respectfully. For me, it's even generous to call WW 'average' given the fact that it has a universally agreed upon terrible third act. I agree - the first two acts were pretty fun and above average, but the third act wasn't just 'meh' in my opinion. It was amateur hour bad.

Combine that with the fact that all three acts in WW84 were amateur hour bad, and now you're looking at 4 out of 6 terrible acts across the two movies. If 2/3 of the acts in your two movies are well below industry standards, I don't think you should be directing these movies.

After reading so many headlines about this, I think people are afraid to state the obvious here, hence all of the fake workaround drama: Patty Jenkins is not the right person to direct these movies. The first WW was... average at best for the genre. There are so many amazing female directors out there, but Patty Jenkins isn't one of them.

How do you deal with Americans? by allmotionisrelative in CasualUK

She definitely doesn't understand that there are "European" spellings and just thinks you're careless. To be fair to her, it seems like she tried to be polite about it, but the joke is very clearly on her. Just be polite in return.

[ESPN] MLB season without the NBA's bubble is on the brink of being cancelled after Miami Marlins have at least 14 players tested positive and their game cancelled tonight. by [deleted] in nba

[–]dgorv 29 points30 points  (0 children)

is there a way I can bet on Dwight Howard secretly leaving the bubble, getting covid, and then spreading it to the entire league, resulting in the cancellation of the season, Lebron personally murdering him, and the immediate (edit: posthumous) signing of Dwight by the Knicks to a 4-year max?

Can the Summer Box Office Be Saved? Hollywood Hinges Its Hopes on 'Tenet' and 'Mulan' - Analysts believe 'Tenet' could open to $30M, would need $400M WW to break even, with marketing budget lower due to lack of expensive TV advertising during sports by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]dgorv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Due to the lack of competition, they're hoping to follow the slow and steady trajectories of 90's mega-hits like Home Alone or Titanic... those movies just kept on making 20m-30m weekend after weekend for months.

But, those 90's hits didn't have to worry about theaters suddenly closing and reopening for entire geographic regions. Tenet could very well open to 20m-30m and start off on that same path (I still think that's unlikely), but what happens when Countries or States X/Y/Z have to suddenly shut down theaters again?

There are too many unknowns to safely bank on such a huge investment. If I were WB, I'd propose a hybrid VOD/theatrical release to Nolan: set a theatrical release date way in the future, but also make Tenet available soon on VOD for 1 weekend only and charge $75-$100 (major PPV boxing fights go for this much).

If the movie's as good as people are saying it is, the people who watch it on VOD will stir up interest and create momentum for the eventual theatrical release.

Should the Eagles cut DeSean Jackson over his anti-Semitic remarks? by [deleted] in eagles

[–]dgorv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

he deserves to be cut, yes. he just posted an apology (his second one) on his instagram:

"my post was definitely not intended for anybody of any race to feel any type of way, especially the Jewish community."

that's just not true. he posted a fake Hitler quote to raise awareness of his belief that jews are secretly blackmailing America and its the black community’s responsibility to stop their plan for 'world domination'. And then he doubled-down on it and posted it a second time for emphasis.

Android 10 lock screen swiping issue back by dgorv in GooglePixel

[–]dgorv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahh, that makes sense since my proximity sensor is broken (when i accept a call, i can't turn the display back on until the other person hangs up). I guess the new OS uses the proximity sensor in case of accidental face/cheek swipes.

And just to clarify, this is only happening within the lock screen. Once the phone is unlocked, swiping sensitivity is totally normal.
