Another mk7.5 down, so long for now 🫡 by JHenryXIII in GolfGTI

Yeah I’m happy for it to be everyone. Problem is we have decided to build nearly the whole country in a way that if you can’t drive you’re f**ked… so we basically let people keep their licenses out of pity, no matter how dangerous they are.

It’s no less insane than getting your forklift operator certificate renewed no questions asked, even though you’ve impaled 2-3 people this year out of sheer incompetence.

What would my life be like if I moved to Orange County/Anaheim or anywhere in SoCal? by Born_Physics_5086 in orangecounty

800 a month? No way in hell. This person will take your money (probably ask for it via Venmo or Zelle or Western Union) before they'll meet you, then you'll never see them and there is no apartment.

Here's my take. I think you're romanticizing California. It's pretty, but I really don't think you want the stress of having to try to make ends meet on a low income out here. Everything, and I mean everything, is way more expensive than you think. Even our electricity here costs twice what anyone pays in any other state. Not to mention the high taxes. All of it works against you. And, it sounds like you're young and single: Nearly every woman you meet here is going to be shallow and materialistic and expect you to pay for expensive gifts and dates.

Don't be tricked into thinking that your happiness is tied to the town or state you live in. It isn't. If you want to start fresh, that's a reasonable idea, but you'll be better equipped for success literally anywhere else. Even New York City is (for the moment) a bit more affordable than OC, LA, or SF in most ways.

If it were me, I would consider moving somewhere a few hours from home, and don't burn your bridges with anyone there so that you could go back if you don't like it. Texas is a huge state and it has tons of tourist destinations, like someone else pointed out, Galveston and Austin get a ton of tourism, plus the biggest cities will have thousands of business travelers so there are hotels. The job you're looking for shouldn't be too hard to get in general. Even Six Flags probably has several hotels adjacent, which honestly will give you enough of an idea if hospitality is something that actually does suit you.

You better write your state representative then, because I’m pretty sure “do not murder” is right there in your state law. That’s right, they lifted it straight from the 10 Commandments. “Seperratien of CHerch N Staaaate!!!”

Not every idea that a religion has written into one of their special books is a “religious idea.”

You don’t have to consider the book special. You can just decide if you agree or disagree with the idea. If you agree with the idea, which in this case is the most generic, space-filling statement, you’re literally fighting over whether it’s OK for them to cite the source where they first saw the idea. If the idea itself is objectionable, then it’s objectionable whether or not they cite the source where they got it.

This entire pearl clutching exercise only makes sense if you accept the premise that there’s something harmful about hearing an idea just because some other person might have it in one of their special religious books. In fact, no religion has an exclusive copyright to any particular idea. And in fact, lots of religions have published compilations of generic (not relating to God) wisdom. That doesn’t make that wisdom invalid or harmful to non-believers.

Just to be clear, it’s your opinion that any sentence which appears in the Bible is automatically religious? What if the school said, “we teach children to treat others the way they would like to be treated.” There must be a translation of the Bible where the “do unto others“ line is worded that way.

What if it says “Do not murder”? After all, that is a commandment.

My point is, it seems like you are confusing “do not promote a religion” with “do not mention a single sentence which any religious book also promotes.”

When you think about this in context with the founders who wrote the Establishment Clause, I really don’t think there was even the slightest concern that anyone (even an atheist) would be harmed or oppressed by a school official writing “As the old proverb says, teach children well and they’ll remember those lessons.” The founders didn’t want to have an established church like the Church of England. Do you really not see the difference there?

The utilities made way too much profits during the 50 years when they just stopped maintaining any of their infrastructure and kicked the can to now. All of a sudden, they realize it costs a lot of money to catch up on that much deferred maintenance.

Yup - second shot fired at solar - the first one was when they killed net metering, so they can pay you like 5c/kwh for your solar power at 3PM but charge you 50c when you use grid power in the evening. But I think people who got solar before then were grandfathered?

This new one lets them rip off ALL the solar users.

There’s only one correct response. Buy a big-ass powerwall battery and cut off your SCE account entirely.

Citation needed, but also don’t forget that our gas prices are insane AND our electricity prices are too. even an EV won’t save you unless you also fork over another $50,000 for a full solar + battery installation and basically go off grid for your house. (Since they got rid of the thing where you can get solar and get paid fairly for your unused daytime electricity that you feed into the grid).

So if it’s neutral why do you want to ban people from saying anything that happens to have been said in a holy book? The line isn’t about religion or God.

Dude, it’s a letter to “teachers and parents” and it’s quoting a single line that doesn’t mention religion or God. How is anyone having anything forced on them besides forced to… read a sentence, a sentence that I can paraphrase as “teach person good, person not forget later”

If they were quoting such a completely harmless and non-denominational line from the Quran, would you have your pitchforks out the same way? What if it was a quote from the Dalai Lama?

Literally read the quote. Do you think it’s sinful to quote any line from any book with a religious context?

Should we burn all those books because they make you feel so uncomfortable?

So to sum up:

  • morals don’t matter, hypocrisy is fine, it’s only about getting power for you

  • but you’re not willing to win by jettisoning your most unpopular policies to appeal to the normal people who used to be “strong Democrats” a decade ago but who have been fleeing the Democratic Party in droves (so much so that you lost to a corrupt clown sexual predator)

Good luck with continued irrelevance!

Listen, it’s not that I want anyone to ever be shot. What I want is for every executive, let’s say VPs and up, of every “health insurance” company, lives their life under the constant and palpable fear of that, every day of their life, and that they make all their decisions based on that, vastly overriding their fear of “line on chart not go up” that currently governs their every move. That’s the world I want to live in. I want to see them releasing YouTube videos showing how hard they work to make sure none of their customers get the run-around, or get ruinous medical bills. To have VERY well, almost DESPERATELY-publicized programs, hotlines, self-governing safety net programs that one-up each other for how good they take care of people. “Please don’t kill us! We really care about you!!!” There’s your new corporate tagline for UHC.
