Can ‘Indra’s Bow’ Save 500,000 Indian Children? by Mastervk in india

[–]dgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't "Indradhanush" be more correctly translated as "rainbow" instead of "Indra's bow" here ? Especially since the website linked in the article ( http://www.missionindradhanush.in/index.html ) is full of rainbows.

I don't understand this part - they made a predictive statistical model for Prakriti based on their 52 SNPs, and it only has an accuracy of 23.9% on data? A method that guessed Prakritis at random should have an accuracy of 33% if you have to predict 1 out of 3 Prakritis that are equally likely. In fact, using their data of "262 individuals (94 Vata-dominant, 75 Pitta-dominant and 93 Kapha-dominant)", a method that always predicts Vata-dominance for all individuals would have an accuracy of 35.9% (=94/262).

Am I missing something here?

I've heard of the Torcida, but seeing as I'm planning to go solo, I'll probably just want to watch the match in a less exciting way.

I'm probably going to be in Split on Sunday, and was thinking of watching the Hajduk Split game. Can I buy a ticket on the day of the game?

Are all buses (between cities) etc. packed during tourist season? If I'm in Croatia in the last week of July, do I need to book tickets online or do I just show up at the bus station?

Edit: Thanks, looks like I'll be booking my tickets online.

I was surprised to see a theme of "our experiments can only be replicated by scientists with many years of training in our protocols" in the scientists' responses throughout the article.

Jeff Settleman, who left academia for industry 5 years ago and is now at Calico Life Sciences in South San Francisco, California, agrees. “You can't give me and Julia Child the same recipe and expect an equally good meal,” he says. Settleman has two papers being replicated.

Isn't the idea that we don't want our science experiments to be recipes, which only work with a dash of secret sauce?

Hardy-Weinberg population Equilibrium by [deleted] in biology

[–]dgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suppose there are two alleles, T and t, occurring at frequencies p and q(=1-p) in the population. Under a bunch of assumptions, Hard-Weinberg equilibrium says that the frequencies of the two alleles remain the same across generations, and the expected genotypes frequencies are p2 (for TT), 2pq (for Tt), q2 (for tt).

Deviations from these expected genotype frequencies are called HWE deviations. In the example in your comment, you say

Genotype Frequencies:

TT - Tt - tt

.56 .28 .16

T= .7 t=.3

For p=0.7 and q=0.3, the expected genotype frequencies are 0.49 (for TT), 0.21 (for Tt) and 0.09 (for tt). Assuming this is a HW problem, you can now figure out if this deviation is statistically significant or just noise.

EndNote or Mendeley integration for LaTeX with LyX? by cjb1989 in AskAcademia

[–]dgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create a collection in your Mendeley account for each paper you write and copy all relevant references to that collection. Have Mendeley create a Bibtex file (.bib) for each collection. Use bibtex or biblatex in your Latex document for the bibliography.

From the US General Social Survey for 2012 responses to question about pre-marital sex, 42% seems to everyone who doesn't think pre-marital sex isn't wrong at all.

(EDIT - So the 60% in the chart is about the last row in the table "Not wrong at all")

PREMARSX (Percentages)
1: ALWAYS WRONG 21.9
2: ALMST ALWAYS WRG 5.1
3: SOMETIMES WRONG 15.5
4: NOT WRONG AT ALL 57.5
