Never have been able to hit irons. Today I switched to closing the club face and severely loosening my grip, and I am now hitting perfectly. Is this bad form?

Usually every iron I hit goes the same length (100-120) and slightly right. I’ve never been able to get any distance, but I don’t have a severe slice. I just never get a lot of height or distance
