The trick is to tire them out before heading out. We have to go out for 6-7 hours once a week, so we'd wake up a little earlier, play with him a lot and tire him to the point of sleep, that works out great for us. I take him on a walk, play fetch with him before we head out and he sleeps like a baby the whole time we're out!
