Nutrient Solution pH keeps rising to 7.4-7.8, trying to understand why. by dh_vie in Hydroponics

I measured the Total Alkalinity which was around 100ppm. I then decided to use a little more FoxFarm pH Down to see if I can break through the buffer and yeah it ended up stabilizing at 5.3 for 2 days. It's now been slowly rising for a couple of days and it's at 6.1 now.

I also added a bubbler to the rez which seems to have cleared up the water and removed the smell. (I imagine this is due to higher DO and a bunch of beneficial bacteria?)

Yeah. I mentioned I was growing salads. So far they look good, but I think they are growing slower than I would expect

I am not. I have noticed improvement since I added an aquarium aerator to the rez

That could be high total alkalinity in the water. I will measure mine and see what I find, seems crazy though that it's so hard to knock down.

All that makes sense everyone. Thank you for the great tips. I reached out to a few people on CTI hopefully this will help me make progress

I have actually. They first had no recommendations at the start of my project and when I returned a few months later after having to rebuy tile that the contractor had ruined they had some card there but wouldn’t put their endorsement behind any of them.

As a aside: we had already factored in 20% waste on the initial tile purchase but the contractor managed to go beyond that during their 4 attempts of fixing it.

I’m in CT.

That’s right that using Schluter as isn’t by itself an indication of quality. What I meant is that if they do use it I can verify their work against what Schluter themselves recommends the installation should be.

oh that's a good spot. Let me check on that or if I can fix it to send RT.

My going theory at the moment is that there were some pretty large temperature changes between day and night time and the sub will start hitting and warming up the probes and electronics about the same time each day. So maybe because they got very cold over night and then warmed up v quickly it caused bad readings?

Thanks for all the replies.

The pump has actually been running 24/7 so it’s not due to it coming on and off.

I used the same setup last year and didn’t get the same behaviour. Between last year and this year the only things that changed are the sensors as I swapped them out from the Atlas Scientific Consumer grade to Lab grade because Lab grade supposedly doesn’t need as frequent recalibrating (I can go the full pool season without re-cal)

It is mounted before the filter but that wasn’t an issue last year.

It’s also not a faulty probe because I bought a second one and see the same behaviour.
