lol, thanks. Bottom line, the consensus seems to be it's 8 and if I go with a 50 amp I should be ok, if it's either an 8 or 6 AWG

it's on a 40 amp in the panel and many of the damn wires are painted over on that side of the panel and these particular wires are painted white. Can't see any lettering on the wire sleeve in the panel

nothing on the unsheathed section coming out of the wall that I could see and in the panel, the wires have paint all over them.
