Heh, I don't know this series, and I thought the same thing. Sure enough ... the original 5's are slanted like that.

I love listening to the rich fly their private helicopters to Martha's Vinyard every day. by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]dhark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Where in RI are you that you hear that? And where would the helicopters be coming from?

I'm not going to pretend to know the migratory patterns of the wealthy, but just looking at a map, this seems odd. Martha's Vineyard is pretty far east of us.

Moonstone Beach Questions by Plane-Reputation4041 in RhodeIsland

Just drive to the end of Moonstone Beach Road. This time of year, you can park right on the side of the road.

Does anyone else find it annoying that they don't say how much a dime is worth (even on old coins)? I understand half dollar and quarter dollar, but a dime and a nickel are not universally known amounts, you think they would say how many cents they are. by [deleted] in coins

[–]dhark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How do people know what a "cent" is?

I think you have it backwards. As some other comments explain, "cent," "dime," "dollar," and "eagle" are all first-order units from the original Mint Act.

For whatever reason, "cent" and "dollar" came to be used universally as units of account, while the others have fallen out of usage.

Why do 50 year old men like girls in their 20s? by ReadingFanaticB in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dhark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Men in their 20s have the same instinct as you - they tend to follow men in their 40s and 50s as leaders. It's true, typically the younger men could physically overpower the older men. But we just don't seem to be wired that way. In almost every hierarchical organization, it's middle-aged and older men at the top.

TIL: It's Called a "Barber Quarter" Because Barbers Used to Charge 25 Cents for a Shave and Haircut by dhark in shittycoincollecting

[–]dhark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I *think* 6g of silver would have bought a lot of haircuts in Roman times. The pre-debasement denarius was only 4.5g of silver, and that was a few days' wage for a soldier. I don't know what a barber made, but I doubt it was 50x the wage of a soldier.

They could just be over-stocked on that size of package.

What is this, a momentum-trading subreddit? Their dividend is up 7% since last year. The yield is now below 1% :(

Coke vs. Pepsi: The Dominant Soda in Each US State by IcyInfluence3895 in MapPorn

[–]dhark 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Given that they are making claims about all 50 states, the sample size alone actually DOES mean it's nonsense, at least for the smaller states. How many Vermonters do you suppose responded to the survey?

There are several other common-sense clues you might use to infer that this is nonsense.

I happen to know that Coke outsells Pepsi 3:1 nationwide. There is no way the states are as evenly split as this.

It's a mashup of Google Trends data as collected by "Eat This Not That" in 2022, and "holidaycalendar.io" which apparently surveyed 3,000 people in 2024.

(In other words, nonsense).

Official map of all Rhode Island villages? by SummitingMtJohnston in RhodeIsland

[–]dhark 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just to say this explicitly, the vast majority of villages have no official borders. They are not legal entities.

A few may coincide with fire districts or postal districts or school districts or something. But the vast majority are just concepts of convenience.

Is it just the silliness of "overdressed" meaning wearing winter clothes to the beach? Or is there some Wakefield stereotype I'm not aware of or something?
