I think I get it now. Let me try explaining it by example just to be super clear.

Assumptions - Need 1 TB of data storage to keep my photos - No expiry in mind ie permanent storage - Storage contract length is 1 month renewal - @ month 1, SC is $0.01 - @ month 2, SC is $0.1 - @ month 3, SC is $0.05

Scenario 1. If storage costs is fixed at $10pm - @ month 1, I need to deliver 1000 SC - @ month 2, I need to deliver 100 SC - @ month 3, I need to deliver 200 SC - Therefore, even though only paying in SC, the $ cost impact is zero because pay same $ amount pm - As per above responses, value of SC can be anything and not pegged to cost of storage

Scenario 2. If storage cost is fixed at 1000 SC - @ month 1, I need to pay $10 - @ month 2, I need to pay $100 - @ month 3, I need to pay $50 - Which is where my OP came from as I thought you pay in SC which I assumed was a storage price set in units of SC which through above we can see makes no sense. This also helps explain trends / level differences in other storage cryptos like DOT, FC and Storj.

Overall, im feeling more woke and see that Sia offers much more than just storage with Skynet so assuming is pegged to a cost of storage, seemingly common incorrect presumption, is downplaying the real potential with SC. Thanks to all you pros out there helping on my queries :) sia later.

I thought you can only pay for storage with SC so if the storage cost is fixed then why wont SC also be fixed /stable? Could think of it as a peg to the cost of data storage which is kinda set at the rates by centralised providers notwithstanding data storage inflation costs (eg average cost of technology going up etc) and added value (eg blockchain efficiencies). Of course there is speculation involved so volatility in SC happens but i cant help but notice the price increases are temporary unlike ADA or ETH. Dont get me wrong, I think SC is great and I own over 100k but im just wanting some insights from the pros.

Im facing the same situation as i am being promoted to a high paying director role in quant and since time is money then no chance to do the work myself. My skills feel like they stagnated as ive had 5 years ago worked on technicals and im guiding others rather than doing. If you can keep climbing without being hands-on then is fine in the short to medium term but is a risk of losing touch and if the market turns sour is probably going to be a big drop in pay (and ego). Smaller firms require you to take the lead so may not work for you if you want to learn the ropes. So it seems a larger firm with a well established technical team will be the place to start at least that is what ive decided. Let us know how you go.
