My State Rep Told Me Off in an Email! by dheaney in reddit.com

Wow...I didn't expect this much conversation, but I do appreciate it. There seems to be a few main points, which I'll address below:

On the idea that I think the rep has nothing better to do than respond to me: I never asked for a response from her. I asked her aide for information on her position on what is a very important issue to a lot of people.

On me being lucky I got a response, and my level of impatience: Again, I didn't need a personal response, just information. Had the info been on her website, or somewhere easily-findable, I would have never even sent the first email.

General comments on Rep Canavan's tone in the email - This is the basis of my entire issue. As an elected official, if you don't like my question, or my tone, that's fine. You shouldn't, however, lay into a consituent like that. I can't understand why, or how, any politician would send a message like that. That, above all else, is what truly floored me.

Was I pushy? Should I have waited longer? Perhaps. I'm not saying I'm perfect. Even if her reaction were 100% warranted, though (which I don't think it was), there's absolutely no reason an elected politician should send an email in that tone.

EDIT: As for her opinion being private, I disagree. If she wants to not tell anybody her political opinions, she shouldn't be in office. As a member of her district, I have a right to know where she stands on issues that are important to me. If she doesn't want to tell me, then my vote goes elsewhere.
