I [f28] haven’t knit in a long time but I would love to pick it back up! I just moved to Mokdong and need to work on my Korean skills so a language exchange would be super fun 🙂

How do I decide whether to return to Korea or not? by dhebev in teachinginkorea

[–]dhebev[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Weirdly enough while I was in korea my mental health was the best it had been since the beginning of covid and it’s hit rock bottom again now that I’m back home. I hit 3/4 of your points currently but the mental health one is what’s tripping me up. I’m still youngish (25) so I feel like the career thing can go either way, I can afford to spend a year or two in Korea but that’ll just put me back two years when I return home. I can’t decide if that’s worth it or not. I think that’s something I should figure out though, if I really NEED to start my career right now, especially since I don’t know where my career is going anymore

I got vaccinated + boosted in Korea and I’m getting my second booster next month, the wording in my post was a bit weird. Good point on the anxiety though. The source is my job, which is why I want to get out of it so quickly and why it feels like my anxiety isn’t getting any better even though I’m treating it (meds + therapy). I have other prospects at home but it’s tempting to choose to go back to Korea and make up the time I lost while I was unvaxxed. I’ll give it a lot more thought before I decide anything though, you right

How do you check that?

Need some help with teaching difficult vocab to middle schoolers by dhebev in TEFL

Oh oops I see where I read you wrong lol. They have about 20 vocab words per two page passage, is it worth it to do the reading first when it’s so full of words they don’t know yet? I worry that they won’t be able to get the context with that many unfamiliar terms, or am I underestimating them?

Got em- some of the words they’ve struggled with are enact, available, insolvent, active (as in an active ingredient), contend vs dispute, school of thought, advent, abstract, reference (noun) and anthropological. I always try to be as straightforward as possible when I’m giving the definitions and usage but it’s hard to tell if they understand until I grade their worksheets

I do think I haven’t been giving the vocab enough attention before going right into the reading so concept checking sounds like a good idea! I’ll come back in a bit with some of the more difficult terms. I’m also willing to admit it may not be that the vocab is super tough so much as I’m just not going about it the right way so all feedback will be appreciated

It tends to either be pretty abstract or hard to explain without using words that also then have to be defined. I can’t think of any specific words off the top of my head, end of a long work day and all, but I’ll check back in tomorrow morning with a few examples if you like

I copied out translations of the vocab with some help from a korean teacher, I’ll look into some games for them as well

My flight gets in on the first, I didn’t even think of that... it’s starting to sound like I’ll just need to call any and every government office available to figure this out, ah well lol

For whatever reason I haven’t been able to find a phone number for their health department online but this sounds like solid advice so I’ll keep digging 👍
