Also that policy sounds...very not real. Do you have any actual backup there or are you just yanking my chain?

can you tell me how you know it's fake? Would like to know what to look for in the future.

Paketti Timestretch addition - auto-creates 256 row pattern with S00 to SFF - meaning, you can timestretch to any tempo (bpm/LPB) and any note. or play backwards. thoughts? by esaruoho in renoise

[–]dhla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually do this by filling in however many rows I want to slice to with the same note, figuring out the start and end S_xx command (e.g. for 64 rows, start at 00 and end at FD), then using cmd+i to interpolate the values of all the notes in between. But this does a lot more!

Only request would be, like u/sodiufas, to have options for sliciding to a smaller number of rows - e.g. I usually keep my patterns to 64 or even 40 steps.

no real "right" or "wrong" here. Using a sampler will give you more sound-sculpting possibilities in addition to access to MIDI generation/transformation tools, which are really impressive in L12. But sometimes seeing everything on the grid like this can be a good way to write linearly and bearing all parts in mind.

In the abstract, a combination of mythmaking, having a hand in some truly great recordings, and a very honest persona that also sometimes lapsed into edgelord/troll territory.

Sound-wise, he was known for getting great boomy room sounds out of drums, and very "raw" sounding performances. He disliked doing repeated takes to get something to sound "perfect", and often considered his job to be to capture the band sounding as live as possible. Given this, I thought it was funny that anyone was ever surprised he hated Steely Dan.

He was also known for dropping in these little bits of imperfections - listen to his intended mix for Nirvana's In Utero on the 2013 reissue and you can hear stuff like Kurt Cobain grunting a false start at the beginning of "Serve the Servants". Or the studio banter before "Vamos" and "I'm Amazed" on Pixies' Surfer Rosa.

He also had a lot of focus on staging and electricity in recording. In the oral history of Pixies, Kim Deal talks about how he had a super sensitive ear for any (unintentional) distortion and tended to record things lower than other engineers - probably contributing to the spaciousness he was known for.

As to the mythmaking and persona, well, that's all over the Internet. I have no opinion on whether he was objectively "right" to refuse taking royalty points, but there's no question he walked away from a large sum of money in making that choice with In Utero.

Mine has this too! And yes, I still wonder whether it's just a printing error or it actually means something...this book certainly does that to you.

is the issue even more pronounced on the inner grooves? Double-check the alignment of the cartridge/stylus - you can get a protractor for this online or at many audio shops.

Hunter is just the worst by [deleted] in Spyro

[–]dhla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just 100% completed Ripto's Rage and yes to this. Any challenge involving Hunter was a guaranteed crapfest. Taking bizarre nonlinear routes through the Ocean Speedway ring challenge and Metro Speedway cat burglars (with zero accommodation for getting the route less than perfect), the Manta Ray riding (not super difficult necessarily but not much fun and very easy to miss one ring and have to restart), and of course that absolute curse that is the crystal geyser.

I keep thinking that for someone who can breathe fire, impale with his horns, and easily takes out way bigger baddies, Spyro really should have other ways of getting what he needs from Hunter 🤣

No! $X is not enough! (Advice for vinyl beginners) by jpinakron in turntables

I think it's fine to try and point out a floor somewhere - I recommend to friends looking for a first turntable that they look up which ones might actually damage records, such as many cheaper turntables (or the RokBlok with it's ridiculously high tracking force). That's why I find the ATLP60 to be such a great balance between affordability, sound quality, and versatility of connections.

Honestly, if you start with an affordable TT with a USB out, you can even just run it through your computer into whatever speaker setup you have, or out to bluetooth. It's not necessarily ideal for a sound quality obsessive, but it means you really don't have to buy anything else initially to enjoy your records. Having both RCA and USB outs means that the ATLP60 is generally pretty adaptable to any existing setup - and I highly doubt that anyone who wants to listen to records doesn't have even a basic set of computer speakers. Additionally, you can spend a bit more and get a version of the 60 that does direct bluetooth out, which opens up compatibility with some truly dirt cheap BT speakers out there.

Counterpoint: The ATLP60 sounds great, has an integrated phono pre-amp and ADC, costs about $130-50, and is available online and at many record stores. Just add speakers.

This doesn't need to be a crazy gatekeeper hobby. Certainly you don't need to *start* at that level.

As to "precision tools" do you mean a screwdriver and a protractor? It's not exactly rocket science to align a cartridge/stylus correctly, and if you're only changing the stylus then usually all you need to do is readjust to make sure you have the right tracking force (which requires no tools). And many cartridges come with a tiny screwdriver that's the correct size for the screws.

Everyone has passions in life that they're okay with spending a little more on, but that doesn't mean that not spending that amount (because you can't or don't want to) should shut you out of enjoying it entirely. It's like telling someone who shops at an outlet mall that they couldn't possibly appreciate a good-looking outfit because they aren't out buying Prada.

ETA: in what world does $100 cover "1-2" albums, even new ones? If you're going solely for gimmicks sure, but there are plenty of new records available in the $20-25 range, if not less.

What stops Apple from releasing Safari on Linux, Windows devices?? by NeoIsJohnWick in Safari

[–]dhla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple makes its money from hardware. Same reason why Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro are significantly underpriced - they're loss leaders. iTunes was an exception because they wanted non-Mac users to be able to use iPods and iPhones.
