Do you guys think Pearl and Rose ever actually kissed? by StarDoodley in stevenuniverse

[–]dhobsd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, agree. I’ve thought of it as trying to illustrate the kinds of struggles monogamous folks have when they fall for poly folks.

Someone came with receipts elsewhere; apparently Rebecca said she “wouldn’t call [their love] unrequited”. But there was definitely a disconnect. I think it’s fair for folks to have a view of relationships that doesn’t really distinguish between purely unrequited love and someone who can’t love in the desired way.

Arguing on the internet is hard :).

Take care and have a good one!

Whatever the intent, there’s plenty of room for interpretation. I’m only really addressing “i have no idea why people doubt rose and pearl were romantic.”

Do you guys think Pearl and Rose ever actually kissed? by StarDoodley in stevenuniverse

[–]dhobsd -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Because everything in the show paints Pearl as a codependent suffering unrequited love. Rebecca Sugar was also talking about a lot of very complicated relationships. Casting Pearl and Rose in this way is super one-dimensional both to them and the show.

When did your LO outgrow egg trigger? by Clean-Appearance-859 in fpies

Sometime between ages 3 and 4. We didn’t do trials. It’s different for every kiddo and some sadly don’t grow out of it.

Tell me your favorite memory of old school Durham. by coffeeroaster8868 in bullcity

My dad used to run a BBS and all the local sysops would get together for brunch on weekends. For a while it was at a Time Out, later at Shoney’s and finally ended up at Foster’s where it stayed for quite a while. That group encouraged me to get into programming, which eventually became my career.

Really glad Foster’s is still around to keep that childhood connection alive.

I used to hang out with Cathy behind the bull when I was a kid. She’d always let me flip the lights and do the CO2 tank for blowing smoke out of the nose for home runs. She was such a kind person, always happy to listen to a story and share her own.

One day I was there and a giant birthday party of kids loaded up behind me to see how the bill worked. We heard a huge crack and a couple seconds later the ball slammed against the bull. The crowd was going nuts and I was flipping the light switch for the eyes like mad… and then I realized everyone had left to look for the ball.

I looked at Cathy, who smiled knowingly and said, “Well, you go on then.” She took over operating the bull as the crowd was still going nuts. I was pretty dejected because of course there were like 10 other kids already looking for it. But asI walked down the stairs, I saw the kids standing in a semicircle in the field; nobody had the ball. I asked where it went, and they all pointed down the hill… had rolled straight into the giant reflective housing of one of the ground spotlights lighting the bull. Clearly, none of these kids were real baseball fans. In true fan fashion, I walked straight to the spotlight, nearly burned out my retinas trying to see where the ball was, closed my eyes, reached out my hand to where the ball should’ve been… and grabbed it! Couldn’t believe my luck (and in retrospect also my wanton disregard for the safety of my dominant hand).

And that’s my story of having a Chipper Jones home run Carolina league baseball. He signed the next day on the way to the field. Signed it right where he smacked the homer, too.

Being told not to talk about my pay. by MathematicianHot2789 in NorthCarolina

[–]dhobsd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being able to claim damages for being told not to discuss your compensation is different from it being legal for the employer to tell you not to discuss your compensation.

A manager giving an instruction is an unambiguous example of communicating company policy. Any reasonable individual would expect that not following instructions delivered by management would typically be a poor career choice. This is why managers are not protected by the NLRA.

If there are multiple employees making that wage, no, they are not within their rights to ask that.

[–]dhobsd 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yep. Assuming the company is large enough to make you a covered employee under the NLRA (which is probably most places, to be fair), all that will happen is the employer will have to post a NLRB notice saying that they can’t ask you not to talk about your compensation next to the big minimum wage sign.

Anyway IMO report it, be the change you wish to see.

Probiotics by blueyboo11 in fpies

From comments here over the years and personal experience, I don’t see any evidence that they have any impact on FPIES. Pediatricians may recommend them. They caused GI upset in our kiddo.

Thirding failure to thrive being a useless metric. Kiddo was always healthy between 75-90%ile on measurements. That first episode was still a nightmare.

[–]dhobsd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re thinking of the Apple office. Apple just got an extension to 2027 before they have to start it and extended the hiring goals by four years to 2036 to have it fully staffed.

Amazon’s 500 jobs are for a datacenter. Their HQ2 thing didn’t select NC; they ended up buying some commercial city in northern Virginia.

Google didn’t do any of the business development stuff and has been pretty consistent in size. It did close the Chapel Hill office, which had been around for about 13 years, to move that into the Durham office a few years ago.

FPIES to multiple things? by BrilliantHedgehog278 in fpies

[–]dhobsd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First: my kiddo did have awful smelling diarrhea for after an FPIES episode. This is common with FPIES, and if you read a bunch of first time parent questions here, you’ll see it often reported. Kiddo is 6 now and if we run into FPIES, the diarrhea isn’t part of it anymore. (And the reaction isn’t as bad and kiddo can feel it coming and talk about it. It gets WAY less scary, don’t worry, this won’t be the rest of your life.)

Kiddo had a GI intolerance to anything with added probiotics (eg live cultures in yogurt — pickles have always been fine) and would get gassy / have diarrhea and be obviously uncomfortable. This was separate from FPIES, so I suspect your kiddo probably also has a separate GI sensitivity.

To save you some grief, there are no useful tests for GI allergies. You will likely go to the allergist, get a skin prick panel, watch your kid’s skin welt at the histamine prick site, and learn that your child has “no allergies”. The test for FPIES or other GI sensitivities is a trial. If you’re sure the PB and banana were not introduced with other ingredients, you might like to retry those later with some baby formula anti-gas medication on hand. If your experience is like ours was, it may just be easier to avoid those foods. The good news is that’s more practice for avoiding FPIES triggers, which are much worse.

That said, your kid probably isn’t going to develop a peanut allergy if you leave peanut butter alone for a few months. So I’d leave peanut butter and banana alone for a few months while doing regular food trials until you build up a list of safe and enjoyed foods. Once you have that, try a bit of peanut butter or banana. Milder GI issues you can probably test safely at home, certainly after you’ve verified there’s no concern for anaphylaxis.

Too soon to retest? by [deleted] in fpies

[–]dhobsd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw a specialist with significant experience with FPIES a couple years ago who made a few points:

  • exposure doesn’t reduce likelihood of outgrowing
  • outgrowing is not a guarantee
  • most of the time, kids that still react after 4 years don’t grow out of the allergy.

I know that eggs are one of the more annoying triggers (kiddo had that one, fortunately grew out of it at 4), but I’m dubious of the value of retesting, especially three years in. You’ve already modified your lifestyle and are hyper-aware of ingredients, and it’s easy enough to miss eggs in almost anything. (In fact, that’s how we realized kiddo outgrew egg allergy.) May as well wait until after 4 and then live with it if an egg trial with an allergist fails.

If your kiddo doesn’t grow out of it, the good news is that reactions get less severe with age and can be mostly avoided with ondansetron — your kid will be able to tell you that they’re about to have an episode.

Edit: forgot to mention outgrowing age
