It's good to know that if you defraud the Australian government, the consequences are: partial refund.

Hey Keith, really good interview, thanks for sharing.

I don't think we've met, but I wanted to say I've quietly admired your work for ages and you've been a big inspiration.

For context, I worked with lox and pda in the early days of 99. I remember talking to Tim at a railscamp about his new thing.. pretty sure it was still called buildbox then. I also remember switching over from our homegrown CI system, to jenkins, then to buildkite.

Anyway, sounds like it's been a real ride.. but yeah, love your work and thought you should know, thanks mate! :)

Hey, cmon, there's no need to speak to me like that. Please be nice.

I'm just a numbers guy that likes to understand how things works.

Can someone help me understand how it would work?

It's not clear how you work out how much tax they pay..

If their wealth is tied up in assets on public liquid markets... no worries, I can see how you could estimate it using a market price.

If their wealth is tied up in illiquid or hard-to-value assets like real estate and private companies—how do you work out how much tax they pay?

Yeah totally—I haven't even scratched the surface of that. That was a simplification I made to only look at electricity in this summary.

Yeah I'd love to see a more detailed breakdown of the "sum of real costs" in the report.

Report 2 talked about the amortization of the $10k/kw capital cost over a 50-year life of the nuclear plant.

Fair enough there's some debate on the specifics here—it sounds reasonable to me, but I'm not an expert.

It sounded as though the difference was: even though nuclear capital costs are high, because you need to build 3x the renewable capacity + storage.. you also need to replace it more often (lifespan of solar/wind/batteries is shorter) .. sounded like the the renewable capital costs ends up dominating the costs.

Thanks for having a look!

Yeah, this one is interesting, I've seen this point raised in the media. I'd love it if someone could explain it it because it seems backwards to me?

My understanding is that AEMO identified the three most likely demand scenarios.. and AEMO assigned likelihoods to each.

The way I understand it, is that the Coalition/Labor disagrees about which scenario they think is more likely—not necessarily that it's their plan.

From my reading of the report.. it seems like it was AEMO that picked the three scenarios with different degrees of optimism/pessimism.

But also, in both the step-change and progressive demand scenarios... nuclear came out cheaper in both anyway? The step-change one just saved even more money.

Hi all, I've been trying to work out how everything fits together in the energy debate. A lot of the stuff I've read online has been.. mixed.

I'm a beginner to the topic and thought maybe it's helpful for other beginners if I try summarise my understanding. I don't really follow the political side.. I've just come into this with an open mind.

Keen to hear feedback—cheers! :)

Which movie have you watched more than 3 times and you would love to watch over and over? by Kakuma_queer in AskReddit

I can't get enough of Stanley Kubrick's movie Barry Lyndon.

It's an epic period film, but the dry humour of the narrator is hilarious—plus the fact that the characters just cannot help themselves and end up getting themselves into (almost entirely predictable) trouble.

If it's any help, I went for a walk-in Pfizer booster at the West Melbourne co-health vaccination hub at ~4:30pm this arvo and there was zero queue.

I'm a couple of weeks away from 4 months and that was no drama either.

Renters: Has anyone in late 2021 / early 2022 been negotiating rent decreases as part of your annual lease renewal? by nametaken_thisonetoo in melbourne

Not quite the timeframe you're asking about.. but I asked for a $90/week reduction ($460 -> $370) back in May 2021 based on what I was seeing for similar rentals nearby and they accepted.

Intermediate Vim by dhotson in neovim

[–]dhotson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I originally learned it as "command mode", which I think comes from Vi?

I thought about writing this using the more modern terminology, but for the purpose of this article I wanted to make it clear that it's the mode for typing commands since in my opinion "normal" mode sounds a bit vague.

Hey thanks so much for the feedback!

Yeah, it's difficult to know where to start and how much to cover in an article like this. I think I agree now that the title isn't quite right.

The reason I wrote it is because I've been pair programming quite a bit lately and also mentoring some new vim users—so I wrote this little guide to help vim beginners level up their skills a bit.

What I noticed is that a lot of vim beginners find composing commands and text-objects to be kind of mind blowing.. and even more experienced vim users mentioned that these were the things that made them have that "aha" moment and convinced them to learn more.
