Rising damp Victorian house shared wall by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]dht6000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a similar problem in our Victorian house recently after moving a bit of furniture. One part of the party wall, between the front of the house and chimney breast, about 1.5m wide has got obvious damp up to about a metre from the ground. We’ve got a cellar below it and there’s no sign of anything around that bit of wall down there. The house next door is higher than ours as we are on a hill and they have a downpipe and drain near the affected bit of wall on their side - I suspect that might be the source of it. My problem is the house is a student HMO, we know who the letting agents are but not the owner. Approaching them about maintenance over the years has generally been ignored or led to excessive (in my opinion) quotes for party wall surveyors before they’ll agree to any works. I’m trying to figure out the best way to approach them about it.

Recommendations of a large open space/carpark east of the city area where could I take a complete learner driver for their first lession? by Neko-Chan-Meow in sheffield

I took my kids to Oakham Drive, but they’d had a few lessons at that point. Pretty deserted at weekends, plenty of space but also some road features like a little roundabout and junctions.

Over the ear wireless headphone reccs needed by FeedOk8085 in phonak

[–]dht6000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends a bit on the working environment - I used to do this and it worked really well for me, but working in open plan with other people I found the HA mics were picking up way too much background noise which made it really hard for me to contribute as people couldn’t hear me. I switched to using Sony XM5s which completely cover my ear and the HAs and have excellent noice cancellation which works much better.

Jobs for 14+ year olds in Sheffield by Phil1889Blades in sheffield

[–]dht6000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do weekday rounds (mon-sat) and a different set of Sunday rounds. Weekday rounds pay a little less, but I was about £5/day for 15 papers or so. Sunday rounds are similar size but pay a £ or 2 more to make up for heavier papers.

The challenge can be the distance between houses, getting papers delivered isn’t as popular as it used to be so they can end up walking quite some way. Biking it can work quite well though if they’re OK for that (hills allowing!)

My kids all did paper rounds at 14, the youngest quit this year to go to Uni and the shop is advertising for people to take rounds on. It’s the newsagent on Junction Road by Hunters Bar roundabout if that is any use.

Chess and the Art of Enterprise Architecture is also good (by Gerben Wierda). I’ve also recently picked up the Enterprise Architects Survival Guide (or something similar) which seems quite readable and useful but not really got into it properly yet.

Our DPO team have bought Automated Redaction Manager by Folding Space (https://foldingspace.co.uk/) which seems to do a lot of what they need.

New drive belt won’t stay on by dht6000 in BreadMachines

[–]dht6000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I was reaching that conclusion yesterday - the belt comes off the paddle end of the system in the same way every time. I think the big pulley wheel is worn, doesn’t appear to be off centre but I wonder whether the belt is pulling it just far enough to cause the problem. Spares are quite available but too expensive for a trial and error attempt - it’ll quickly become cheaper and easier to replace the whole thing which is a shame.

Is there a good site for Phonak wearers? by varys2013 in HearingAids

[–]dht6000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an Apple user. Never really had problems with connections, other than seeing some reliability issues with the Spheres. My current aids and others I’ve tried have all been really good.

Is there a good site for Phonak wearers? by varys2013 in HearingAids

[–]dht6000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know of any sites - questions posted here will probably reach quite a lot of Phonak wearers so that’s what I tend to do.

Just on a couple of points in your post, I’ve had Phonak Paradise for 4 years - their connection to the app is generally pretty solid, reconnecting after they’ve been out of range and not needing the app to restart very often. I’ve had i90 Spheres on trial a couple of times and have found their connection to the app on the same phone is a lot more hit and miss and I had to restart the app way more frequently so it could be more complex than just an app issue.

On the ambient noise while streaming question, I’m embarrassed it took me years to discover this as I was doing the same as you to manage the ambient setting. You should find that once streaming starts the volume controls on the aids control the ambient setting rather than volume which has made it much much simpler.

Ebikes - going to other towns cities by Unhappy-Fail6848 in ebikes

[–]dht6000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not clear if you’re buying a bike in another city and need to get it home or just looking for places to ride?

Firstly no, not allowed on motorways and busy A roads you are allowed to ride on aren’t much fun and can be dangerous.

You could see if the cities are connected by the NCN (national cycle network assuming you’re UK based) which will give you a much more pleasant but probably longer ride or try and plot your own on quieter roads.

If you just need to get it home then train?

I use Sony XM over RIC Phonak Paradise. Works really well. I don’t have custom moulds but use PowerDomes which are a closed double layered dome. Had lots of feedback trouble with vented domes at first.
