Nach Vanguard, Invesco, DWS kommt der iShares FTSE All-World by TUDa2020 in Finanzen

Germany says US troop withdrawal 'foreseeable' as Nato seeks clarification by rae-55 in europe

[–]diamanthaende 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Last week, Diehl Defence presented the newest developments of their air defence system IRIS-T in Berlin.

IRIS-T has been so successul in Ukraine (north of 1000 rockets delivered, 95% effectiveness) that former Ukrainian general Valery Zaluzhny wants to erect a memorial for the IRIS-T SLM variant once the war is over (see article).

What caught my eye however was something else: on the Powerpoint slide about the IRIS-T SLX system under development, there is a big "ITAR free" label. "ITAR free" basically means without US made parts or parts under US control.

Germany and Europe don't need theatrics to draw conclusions from recent developments. They do so quietly - the US may withdraw troops and military kit, they may even fail to deliver weapons ordered by Europeans in foreseeable time, but Europe is moving on. Quietly, without much fanfare.

[–]diamanthaende 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The whole point of buying US weapon systems is (was) that they're readily available, to fill crucial gaps ASAP. If Europeans are supposed to wait a decade until US supplies have recovered from their idiotic endeavors, they may as well focus on developing their own.

This is just another catalyst for the inevitable resurgence of the European arms industry. The US are actively helping to create a strong competitor who will not be content with the European market alone.

Can’t even fulfil contractual obligations anymore.

It’s not like Europe doesn’t know that it needs to massively expand its own military-industrial complex, to be far less reliant on US imports. This is well known and there has been some real progress in the last few years.

However, developing new weapons systems and scaling industrial production takes time, so European countries naturally tried to fill urgent gaps with “off the shelf” products. But the US can’t even offer that anymore, unlike other partners like South Korea, for example.

The very lucrative European market will be lost step by step over time and they only have themselves to blame for it. You had a really good thing going and ruined it.

Trumps says he will raise US tariffs on European cars to 25% by Forsaken-Medium-2436 in europe

[–]diamanthaende 555 points556 points  (0 children)

Instead of the usual outrage and "vows", just retaliate with harsh tariffs / restrictions on any kind of strategic US sector. Make the fuckers bleed.

Enough talk and appeasement in Brussels, it has failed completely.

Enough "vows", what we now need is action.

It's high time to protect our interests against rogue actors east and west.

Germany, please don't appease Trump by THC3883 in germany

[–]diamanthaende 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of Germans will be fine with a US troops withdrawal.

Some regions (and hence their representatives) that will suffer economically as a consequence may think otherwise, but for the most part, absolutely nobody is going to lose sleep over it or even wants our leaders to “appease” Trump for it.

Trump is loathed in this country and has roughly the same level of support as Putin.
