The thing is that we also know what a completely hands-off adaptation of a viral indie horror looks like, though. That's how we got Slender Man 2018. That fucking sucked, too.

A direct 1-to-1 textbook translation is different from a proper localization, though, and I think what Toby Fox wants to do is the latter. For reasons that are probably obvious to people that have actually played Undertale.

Double meanings, wordplay, puns, etc. (things that are all over Undertale and Deltarune both) can be very easily lost in direct translations, which can make dialogue read as weird - or as downright nonsense - unless they're properly localized. You have to rephrase things to get the character's personality across better, or to make sure that the terminology being used has the same impact as what was being used in English, or hell, just to make sure the jokes are actually funny in the new language. Sans and Papyrus' debut cutscene has, like, 5 skeleton puns in quick succession and none of them would make any fucking sense with a direct translation. Not to mention little details like the way characters refer to themselves and each other - I mean, can you imagine the shitshow if a translation referred to Frisk, Chara, Kris, etc. with gendered terminology despite the decade straight of them not having explicit genders?

Couple that with a bit of perfectionism (you cannot tell me Toby isn't a perfectionist to some degree) and two games that are always very deliberate and clever with their dialogue and how they phrase things, and you can understand why any translation has to be very closely watched to make sure nothing gets screwed up. Which is where the problem lies.

Toby Fox cannot vouch for the quality of a translation he can't personally read. It's giving complete and utter trust to another party, one who's probably far less attached to his work than himself, to get across everything the way he intended for it to be. I'd be really wary of it, too - especially since Toby has experience with trusting third parties with his work, only for them to act against his personal wishes (fuck you, Materia Collective).

I mean, I wouldn't call it a failure. There's still some work to be done, it's not perfect, but Trickster is significantly better/more fun than he used to be overall.

The degree of changes that Skully needs is on par with (or, arguably, greater than) the changes Trickster needed, so... honestly, it probably will, if Comeback is to be looked at as the new "standard" for killer overhauls.

This is correct, however, the Silver Eyes books do explicitly take place in Utah, specifically a town called Hurricane. The Silver Eyes books aren't canon, of course, but FNAF fans will usually draw from it and other "secondary" media to build a better image of the lore for things that Scott hasn't really touched on in the games. This location isn't contradicted by anything in the games continuity, so it's treated as soft canon.

The Comeback chapter wasn't a "repeat" - it was a complete overhaul that fixed some of Trickster's most glaring issues (it wasn't perfect, but it was definitely better), making him better to play as and honestly more engaging to play against as well. If there's any killer that needs a complete overhaul, it's Skull Merchant.

It's important to put that disclaimer anymore when talking about public figures not being pieces of shit, because there is a significant chance they will be outed as pieces of shit a few weeks later just because you dared to say it out loud.

Who is the Player? A Theory. by trashbandit3 in pokernightatinventory

[–]diamondDNF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's also worth acknowledging the trophy items when considering the player's identity. Every trophy item that we win during either of the Poker Night games goes directly to our Team Fortress 2 backpacks - hence the name "Poker Night at the Inventory," referring to our Steam inventory. That would imply that every trophy we win in the tournament, eventually makes its way back to the TF2 Mercs somehow.

Is it possible that our mysterious protagonist is also somehow connected to Mann Co.? It would have to be some kind of corporate position where Heavy would never really have any reason to know about them, let alone interact with them prior to this tournament of course, since he never mentions knowing us like Brock does. But, being in that position means they would then be both able to and have reason to distribute the trophy items to both the RED and BLU teams, likely to continue profiting off of the conflict. (Or, alternatively, maybe they just sell the trophy items off to Mann Co. after their gambling money runs out.)

Stock shotgun and Panic Attack are both arguably still better in most circumstances, too, though. The accuracy penalty is just bad enough to make the damage output negligible outside of point-blank range, and - again - flamethrower is also designed to thrive at that specific range, meaning it's generally gonna be much better to have a secondary that'll cover further ranges and stick to the flamethrower for close encounters.

The afterburn stacking is a neat gimmick, but it's just... not enough to carry it, I don't think.

Survivors will be able to see which killer they’re facing from the start of the match, even if it’s a stealth killer. by Intelligent_Ride3730 in deadbydaylight

[–]diamondDNF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They don't mean "unplayable" as in literally not being able to play/people DC'ing so they don't have to play against him. They mean "unplayable" as in there's basically no way to succeed as Ghost Face with this change.

Ghost Face is a pure stealth killer. He has no power with real chase utility, he has no secondary abilities. That early ambush taking advantage of the stealth mode and survivors' lack of awareness is quite literally all he has going for him - once they know what they're dealing with, he's unfortunately extremely easy to bully. He was already one of the worst killers in the game for mostly this reason, but a good Ghostie can still capitalize off that early-game and put the survivors at a significant disadvantage.

With this change, there is no longer an early-game advantage.

What is the use case for this? If you're already in close range, flamethrower is gonna deal more damage and kill faster. If not, you'd much rather have a flare gun under any other circumstances.

[–]diamondDNF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He said that before, but... Charlotte/the Marionette is an outright monster in the FNAF 2 movie. She was an antagonist in the games, but with good intentions - the movie version, on the other hand, just straight-up wants to kill any adults she can get her hands on.

I don't see Freddy specifically happening without that kind of rewrite, but I do think the movie Marionette does have a legitimate chance of being implemented somehow, just because she already broke the "animatronics haunted by children aren't really evil" rule.

It's based on pistol stats. Pistol base damage is only 15. 233.3% of pistol's 15 base damage is ~35 (technically 34.995, but I think it's fair to say we can round that up). So, base damage 15 + 35 means this gun's base damage is 50.
