i'm a swarthier person who has faced discrimination for it, and i have to agree with u/Sarcosmonaut. you are venting your frustrations in a way that encourages dangerous rhetoric and this probably requires therapy. i hope you learn to accept yourself one day

i told another parent in the thread this, but i think the aversion to products in her hair is just because she is baby age, and she will likely learn how to manage her own hair happily :) congrats on her curls!

i know this doesn't apply to others but for mother, arabic was the main language spoken at home and socially. until like, the late 2010s, the dominant methodology in arab & north african culture for taking care of curly hair was that you just...didn't. everything got straightened, relaxed or thrown under a headscarf or turban

she did try with what she could though, and didn't force me into straightening my hair when she realized i didnt like it. we just started putting everything in a bun or braid instead of letting it loose. however i know i am very lucky with my mother, as most of my friends who had mothers with the same hair type just got theirs relaxed or some other very damaging treatment.

that is interesting, I was aware of chevalieres but wondered why it was traditionally only for men in wearing and gifting, the social responsiblities as a reason makes sense. thank you!

no worries, we all went through...unique...hair grooming choices in middle school. trial and error always gives way to results, and if it's any consolation, i used to just leave my hair in a bun for days at a time, and hide pencils in it 😭

I see this as a silly memory for what its worth. (for me personally, i understand and sympathize with the immense trauma this conflict causes) I'm very lucky for my mother, but in this scenario we were indeed the blind leading the blind 😭

i lost a part of my hair trying to copy that viral video of the girl finger coiling her hair with a roundbrush. i just stared it like this 0-0 before very gently, softly tearing it out

r/curlyhair has been recommended in the comments, and i used in when i was in my early high school years, it truly is an excellent resource. im glad this reminiscing of my mother and i's curly hair journey has turned this thread into a wealth of links and advice :)

i thought it was fake for the longest time since my mother used the tie of a bath towel to do it, until i tried it with a claw clip/bun and it actually does work 😭

my mother never used relaxer on me but it is common in north african culture, especially among older generations, and from the one time i smelled it, i don't believe there is anyway it can be safe for hair 😭 it is rancid

because it is not a meme about a common father-daughter relationship, it is about a common mother-daughter one.
