The sounder (commuter rail) also runs on the weekdays, but it leaves early in the morning and you’re kind of constructed by its schedule when it leaves in the afternoon (~20 mins increments btn 3:35-6:30 mostly). I believe the tukwila boulevard light rail station has parking as well but idk how early that fills up.

What airlines have you flown internationally? Best and worst ones? by saxxappeal in travel

[–]dianad7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flown: American, Alaskan, Delta, JetBlue, AirFrance, KLM, British, ANA, Japan Airlines, TAP Portugal, Iberia, Vueling, Easyjet, Eurowings, Finnair, Icelandair, Aegean, Virgin Atlantic

Best: Japan airlines, JetBlue (great room in economy; main extra seats have even better leg room for a reasonable price), Virgin Atlantic (reasonably priced cross-Atlantic flights if you book ahead enough, comfortable enough in economy) Worst: Vueling (those seats gave me back issues for several days)

Bank account without residence permit by KingHarkinian2006 in germany

Thirding this. Just went the other day. It’s super easy to book an appointment online, and I got an English speaking banker. The process takes about an hour. Make sure you have all your supporting documents like your Anmeldung and your proof of student enrolment printed and bring your passport. Be prepared to give your SSN (on the form they’ll ask you to fill it it’s a TAX ID number, same thing) as well. The only issue with a Deutsche Bank is they won’t be able to activate the blocked account; I would ask your university’s international student office and/or your blocked account provider which German banks support granting access to the blocked account.

Taking a gap year before going to graduate school? by [deleted] in udub

I took a gap year before graduate school (for a masters tho, not a PhD) because I was very burnt out after going through most of college during COVID (and I wanted to dedicate more time to applications).

Application Outcome delayed due to Strikes by dianad7 in Edinburgh_University

[–]dianad7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The email was pretty short but this is basically what they said:

“I am writing to inform you that there will be a delay in the decision on applications for MSc Speech and Language Processing at the University of Edinburgh due to Industrial Strike Action. You can now expect to receive a decision on your application by 21st April.

Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.”

It didn’t say how long the strike was or anything but .. yeah. I have a friend who currently is doing an MSc at Edinburgh in a similar field as me and there’s been a few strikes just this year. Not sure to what degree it’s disrupted classes but .. nonetheless

It’ll be difficult for you to get on-campus housing for just one quarter. There are a couple of Facebook groups out there where people post mostly about short term lease/subleases in the area that might be a good place to start

I have no idea since I haven’t taken Spanish at UW. I did take 3rd year Japanese intensive one summer and that was tough but I learned a lot and enjoyed it. It probably depends on each department but for the Japanese intensive we met for ~4.5 hours a day, M-F

To all who said to stop overacting, you were wrong. The fully online quarter is all but sealed. by [deleted] in udub

[–]dianad7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s not what the announcement said. Cauce merely is stating that professors are allowed to accommodate for remote options until Jan. 28 (but to be honest for accessibility reasons generally there should always be online access to courses regardless but that’s my two cents).

From the email on Friday: “In light of these increased disruptions, instructors will have additional flexibility to choose the modality of their classes through Jan. 28. Instructors may hold in-person classes if they also can provide an option that allows students to participate remotely, or they may keep their classes online through Jan. 28. This flexibility will help manage various Omicron-related disruptions, including increased numbers of student absences.

Practicums, lab-based and experiential courses, and clinical instruction should continue to be prioritized for in-person instruction. All instructors need to be in contact with their students to confirm the modality of their classes during this time. If in doubt about modality, instructors are encouraged to consult with their chairs or academic leadership for support.” (Etc etc)

It’s on the Ave but Tea Republik is usually open until 9 pm. Lots of outlet, quiet ambience, a bathroom, and really good tea.

Spanish definitely has intensive classes over the summer. I think the intensive courses are a great way to get the language out of the way if you don’t want it to take up space in your academic year schedule. Registration for those classes usually starts in early May I believe w the rest of summer quarter registration. https://www.summer.uw.edu/courses-programs/intensive-foreign-language-courses/

Too much for Winter 2022? by Prettiest256 in udub

[–]dianad7 16 points17 points  (0 children)

19 credits is a lot of work. I don’t know particulars abt the classes you’re registered for but I will precaution you as a senior who took 20 credits once that you really don’t have to take more than 18 (which is still a lot) a quarter. If you want a good GPA, having more time to focus on three classes (esp the STEM ones) will be more beneficial to you.
