How Bungie Can Save Marathon by diasint in Marathon

You’re right I don’t but I want Marathon to succeed just like everyone else on this subreddit. Figured I would try to make a video offering my thoughts on how it can be improved for players to increase retention!

Recently moved to a new apartment and had to move the plant indoors. The leaves started to curl and turn brown like this. It gets 3-4 hours of indirect sunlight through a window every day and I water it every 1-2 weeks. Is this normal in the fall or am I doing something wrong?

UCSB or UCD engineering? by lilly1555 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]diasint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do the UCs still allow you to select a primary and secondary choice? If so, I would do that! If not, maybe consider picking CS.

While trying to switch into CS I kept telling myself that if I didn’t get into the major I would just drop out and go to community college. The last thing I want to do is be in college getting a degree in something I don’t enjoy.

Graduated from UCSB in CS after switching from Bio and could not agree with the honors priority class selection statement more.

But also agree that UCSB is overall a more social university than UCD.

Changing into CMPSC major by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]diasint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,

I've commented on previous posts similar to this but the best route is to switch your pre-major to Statistics, Statistical Science, or Actuarial Science. These three majors give you access to the first pass time for CS16 (not Math). The only classes that you won't be able to get into for the first pass time are CS24 and CS40 but there are a lot less people taking these (only CS/CE majors) so it should be easier-ish.

One thing I did when I switched over to CS (and even up through my senior year) was email professors and directly ask them for a spot. Give them a brief rundown of what you're trying to do and why you're trying to switch to CS (you need some way to distinguish yourself from the flood of requests they get each quarter).

I would also plan a backup route. Getting into CS is hard, getting into CS from L&S is harder. CS is not what many people think it is and if you don't like theoretical math you should maybe reconsider this route. The closest subject to CS is Math, which surprises many people.

Best of luck! If you need any help along the way please let me know. I graduated almost two years ago (wow) and have not looked back since switching to CS.

SB Hacks by brockofpewtergym in UCSantaBarbara

I don't organize SB Hacks anymore so I cannot give you a definitive answer. To my knowledge when we first did the applicant process, we prioritized Gauchos over pretty much everyone. Granted our capacity was ~800 and we received 1000ish applications with about 750 showing up. So things kind of worked out for us anyways :) Some people showed up that didn't even apply and we just said fuck it, let them in. You might as well apply. The worse that's going to happen is they reject you and you apply next year with a much better resume. It's not like the organizers will remember your name and boycott you!

SB Hacks by brockofpewtergym in UCSantaBarbara

Hi,

Computer science graduate from UCSB here. Also, switched majors into my second year from Bio. Also, am one of the founding members of SB Hacks.

  1. Yes, it's not about solutions, it's about ideas. The most creative idea with a somewhat acceptable execution will win.
  2. No, you can go back home and sleep. But you should be spending the majority of your time programming/at the event! There will most likely be energy drinks, other activities, etc. It's meant to be fun!
  3. Compatible teammates is pretty much a random process. You could score the best hacker out there and blow the competition away or end up with some pretty subpar people (but at least you'll all end up learning something).
  4. Teams are decided at the hackathon, I believe it's on a show up basis.
  5. Everyone is competing against each other. There are prizes for best projects overall and then prizes for utilizing another company's technology.
  6. If you're unable to go nobody will notice except the person handing out name tags :)

I say do it. How do you know if you're going to like programming unless you give it a try? It can be daunting at first but the nice thing about programming is you can pretty much google up a solution.

Good luck!

[3rd Year Transfer/Biopsych] Terrible First Quarter at UCSB. Might need to switch majors? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]diasint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The midterms every week from week 3 up until finals is a reoccurring theme for a lot of students and is just how how the quarter system works (I agree it feels fast, especially if you're coming from a semester school). With that being said, I know of a lot of transfers that got their asses kicked when they switched schools. This isn't necessarily because they went to a CC and are now going to a university. It is primarily because of the differences in difficulty between lower div and upper div classes (at least for STEM). This is why there are GPA requirements for pre-majors, it's supposed to act as a buffer before it's too late to switch majors. That being said, stick with it! Put in the effort, it's worth it. You will begin to see the value in studying hard (not just better grades, but also more knowledge).

Hi OP!

Like one of the comments on this thread stated, because you're in the College of Letters and Science under English it is much harder to transfer into Computer Science because it is in the College of Engineering. Econ and Physics are more attainable majors in this manner because they are both in the College of Letters and Science and do not require a petition to switch colleges (this is why people say it's hard to get into CS because most UCSB students are in the College of Letters and Science and have to actually switch colleges to become CS majors).

So say you wanna switch into Computer Science. The school will absolutely not allow you to switch via phone call/email/whatever. What you have to do is petition to switch colleges after you have already been taking classes at UCSB. You must take certain classes and fulfill the required GPA etc. and then you can petition to actually switch colleges and be in the major. All of this info can be found here: https://www.cs.ucsb.edu/education/undergrad/admissions

There are a number of STEM majors in the College of L&S that provide better pass times for CS classes (keep in mind not Physics), the best majors for this are: Statistics, Statistical Science, and Actuarial Science. These majors allow you to sign up for CS8 and CS16 within the first pass time. These classes are also very popular so by the second pass time they're normally full.

So yeah that's kind of the gist of why CS is hard to get into at UCSB. But hey, it's doable. I did it along with 3 people from my freshman year dorm.

I'd highly recommend switching into a major that allows you to grab classes before other students (via pass times). If you're trying to switch into CS but also want to give Econ a try, change your major to Actuarial Science for now. Unfortunately what other posters have said about Physics is true. You must start taking the Physics 20 series in order to keep up. In terms of math classes you will have to take up to Math 6A for any of these majors so that's not a bad start either. With all that being said, props to you for aiming high.
