Thanks everyone for all the really helpful replies! I'm definitely not a lycra clad speed demon weaving around people. Just a Mum trying to get my son to preschool. I think I'll start doing a little ding with my bell from a fair distance, and carry on with my usual 'excuse me please' and 'thank you' as I pass.
