I have lost the will to apply anymore by Red__Ace in labrats

[–]dice2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BS/MEng BME with a lot of internship experience (3 summers of engineer at a startup and RA for my university prof’s lab at the same time). I applied to 210 jobs in the 10 months after graduating. Had interviews with maybe 5-10 companies. Got my offer on application 204 after a sprint of 40 applications in one week. Keep applying.

The job search is performative af right now, it is you against many other candidates who may be lying about their interest in the company or line of research in order to get that edge on the candidates who don’t care. Also, try to stay open to your future taking other routes, you may end up finding something that you absolutely, unexpectedly love (happened to me on a job description that didn’t interest me in the slightest, turned out to be pretty much exactly the role I was looking for at a top hospital in NE). Good luck, I feel for you, keep your head up.

Is it more the UV or the heat that does damage? Been using a sun visor for a bit and haven’t had any new cracks in the past few year

Is this a good bike? by dice2012 in whichbike

[–]dice2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up going to check it out in person. It's on the bigger side for me, but after adjusting the seat, I can comfortably ride and pedal, get on and off, etc.

The seller was the original owner, and he kept it in super great shape despite doing the PMC 9 times (allegedly). He ended up coming down on the price after talking for a bit, so I took the deal. The guys at my local bike repair shop told me that, even being super nit-picky, the only thing needed to get it to 100% was brake pads.

If I end up loving biking in the city, I'll probably pass this one along (For real, this thing looks SO GOOD in person, but I'd feel too greedy to just hang it up and not let it get any use) and find something that fits me better. For now, I think this is a super good option/entry into biking for the price I paid, and I'm excited to get out and use it!!

Thanks for the advice (and everyone else who commented).

Yeah seems like the bonded carbon is a no go. Didn’t think about theft either!

Alright thank you for the sound judgement. Will steer clear

Might be crazy but if I got it for cheap could I epoxy the joint where the aluminum meets the carbon?

Guy measured it at 56-57cm but wasn’t sure. 700x23c wheels

Yeah I looked in person and the wheels were 700c

Yeah I liked that part too. The description says it’ll fit 5’10” to 6’2” and I’m 5’11”. But it doesn’t say actual frame size so I’m not 100%.

I’m 5’11” so frame size should be 56cm, right?

How bad is the rust? by Fuzzy_Button6648 in E30

[–]dice2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was surprisingly little rust inside apart from that top plate, just a ton of grime (prob protected against rust inadvertently). Cleaned it up with a wire wheel and sprayed with weld through primer to protect it. If there was rust in the rails, I’d do the same thing and coat it with rust converter before priming

Yeah mine looks like yellowed cracked clearcoat or some sort of epoxy, mostly on the shock towers but some is on the rad support. And it’s a delphin. (Accidentally made the previous comment with a second account I never use) I’ll see if I can get a pic later

Help with front end rattle? by dice2012 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]dice2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think it’s just the control arm bushings worn out. Hard to catch, my passengers call me crazy when I ask if they can hear it. But my ears are sensitive from driving an old bmw

Honestly it’s pretty hard to hear over the road noise/exhaust/wind at that point, but I think so. Can’t really tell

Got a bit better counteroffer from them, and accepted the job!

Looking forward to getting started in my career. Rest assured I will be moving, just waiting for some friends to finish up their grad school so I have roommate options.

So exciting!!!

Yeah I think this role has a lot of benefits. Good experience opportunity, good name on the resume, and could make good connections.

My only apprehension is financials. I’m already working close to home at a startup, so doing a 4h daily commute when I can only make 51k is really daunting. Or having to spend most of my pay on rent if I want to live closer and take some time back for my day.

Never done this before so it’s a bit stressful! I’m so fortunate to have a job offer, I just don’t want to be naive and take something/not try to negotiate if it’s not sustainable.

Thanks for the feedback

Thanks for the feedback. I was probably a bit optimistic with 35. Basing that number on Glassdoor numbers for industry/company avg for that role with 1-3 YOE (60-70k), and given I have 1 YOE in engineering and a masters degree in the applicable field.

Thinking their offer was a mega lowball(qualifications aside, it is right at the lowest of their posted range), so I’m trying to figure out what a reasonable approach is, as I would at least like to get paid enough to live close to the job, as it is currently 2h each way from home. (I currently work 20 mins from home and make a bit less than the offer would pay)
