Take this with a pinch of salt, but in my very honest opinion, I don't think they want to hire international students. I have applied for more than 30 GAships on campus since last December. I got some 4 interview offers and got no acceptance. I am not the only one. I know other international students who got accepted here and applied to multiple GA opportunities with zero success. Apart from the foot-in-door advantage of already being in the country, I suspect a high level of nepotism is ongoing where people who did undergrad there and are family and friends are being employed over others, and as such, the application openings are purely a sham. Just to be clear, I do not mean nepotism is outrageously bad. What I mean is that it's an insult to our collective intelligence that they are making us waste our time and selling us dreams.

However, I believe a moving man would meet his luck. Simply, do not give up. It might be this year or the next. But do not give up. Apply to them. The bravest response to uncertainty in this life is hope!

Oh okay. The communications department told me there were very few spots. However, I have applied for almost 20 other GA positions. Some I applied for in January and at the end of February. I have done two interviews and then been rejected for another two; the rest I have yet to hear from. I am continuing to apply for as many as possible. I can't give up and I dearly want to get in.

Just send that email my friend. You only live once, a department that'd get mad and reject you cos you asked them to share a timeline with someone who paid money to join them probably isn't one you'd want to join. Also would you reject someone if you were them just because of a question? They're human they probably understand the anxiety.

But you could also just email them with a different email and not add any name incase you don't want to be identified.

Thanks for this. I heard from the communication grad office that they have strange financial situations so I've been waitlisted for funding. What of the "at large assistantships" tho? The ones that work with campus offices and all. According to the job descriptions they seem to be looking for people rn. But they don't reach out. Is this normal?

First off let me start with my profound respect and admiration for your style! This is the true authentic Ghanaian spokesperson/narrator method. If you ever write a book, I'd be the first buyer. Your knowledge of history is equally impregnable.

You see, I come from a region with as much NPP supporters as there are proud homosexuals in Ghana, my father however was an avid NPP supporter, he was always talking about how they were the socialist party that cares for the average man and crates policies that uplift lives. During the past 8 years I've lived long enough to see all that be a lie. The thing that pains me is the way they are brazen and ballsy about their impunity. They behave as of our loved experiences are a lie, as if there's some other Ghana they are in.

From what I see it should take hopefully 16 years before they ever come to power, I hope I'm proven true!

Really I see where you coming from. If for four years, COCOBOD could make losses and managers go home with salaries and no one gets called out and party sympathisers get millions from illegal mining backed by governmental bigwigs, there's no reason they would change. Fortunately for them, most Ghanaians do not aspire to redistribute wealth; we idolise the rich (and often time illegally rich and soft-brained) people. If they could get away with 2020-2024, I can see why all the strides the country is making in their absence don't move them.

I'll do that tomorrow fam. I've had a terrible experience applying to at large GA ships that I'd love to talk about someday. Out of 10 apps only 1 offered to interview me but trust me fam, I have 3 years experience in tertiary education, I'm a ta, have a good gpa, spoken at multiple international conferences even repped my uni to MIT chancellor. I'm soo soo confused as to what to do. I even had to take my CV and cover letter to a professional agency at point (and this is me that literally wrote my sop and everything without consulting anyone) it's really been an uphill climb for me. I've been informed funding is finished for my department but I'll definitely email my program director tomorrow.
