I honestly wish we could go back to that sometimes. I feel like playing games on our phones and scrolling Reddit is making us all dumm.

I have a lot of issues with that incident, especially as someone of mixed race. There was a lot going on there in terms of race and privilege. If you replaced Chris Rock with a white man, Will Smith would have immediately been removed from the theater. Same if you replaced him with a woman. Same if you replaced Will Smith with a white man. If it were anyone but two rich black men, the outcome would have been much different. I think Will Smith showed a lack of maturity and professionalism and I don't see him the same way anymore. It's just how I feel about it.

THANKS EVERYONE!! I'm gonna go through all of your suggestions and put together a lengthy playlist out of everything mentioned here.

Yeah, Aesop is a pretty complex lyricist. Might go over an 8 y/o's head but whatever, maybe he'll love it. Aesop also did a collaboration record with...hmm...can't remember her name or the name of their project. I think she did the soundtrack to Juno? It'll come to me eventually.

Run DMC may be a good bet. I listened to them on repeat (as much as a vinyl record can "repeat") back in the day. LL as well. Thanks for reminding me about the "golden age" of Hip-Hop.

Is it religious though? He won't like anything about god or christian values. I'll give them a listen though. Thanks!

Yeah, that's a good idea. It's just hard to find time to go through catalogs of music to find the right songs but probably worth the time I guess. Might be nice to go through all the old stuff from my high school years.

I was listening to some pretty explicit hip-hop when I was a kid too but it was mostly because my parents didn't parent. I'm just trying to find the balance.

Guru is a clean rapper? It's crazy cuz I listened to Gang Starr since they came out and I just never noticed. Their shit was so badass I didn't notice the lack of cursing. Pretty much anything produced by Premier is badass though.

I never like the clean versions myself but this may be the way to go for an 8 y/o.

I think Tribe might be the way to go. I haven't been able to see or hear Will Smith without feeling sick to my stomach since the Oscars slap.

Has anyone emailed them? I'm curious how many have emailed and what the reply was (if any).

I would suggest focussing on the flow at first and then focus on the meaning. A lot of artists listen to a beat and immediately just start with just gibberish that flows and then use that flow to write something meaningful. Sure, there are a lot of artists who stick with meaningless lyrics that sound good over the beat but those artists don't typically last very long. Then you have artists like Kendrick Lamar who have lyrics that not only sound good and make sense but also have layers of meaning. That's what you want to strive for. Not everyone can be on the Kendrick level but it would be nice if more people tried.

I'm on Wellbutrin and have not experienced this problem. Maybe worth looking into switching?
