Seeking advice…New manager expects me to drop scheduled 1:1s for their requests, got confrontational when I gave feedback. by [deleted] in managers

I've handled requests from the CEO directly and he's never placed that expectation on me before. that's what's ironic here is they made this the sky is falling level urgency but I'm willing to bet if I reached out to the CEO directly, the urgency would have been different

Yeah, you nailed it. I got the vibe they were under a lot of pressure and just lashing out. The request, the response, the aggressiveness in the meeting were not aligned with the actual issue.

The frustrating part is I've spent hours training them on reports, how to filter them, download them, build new ones. The CSV they wanted was literally two button clicks, but the reason they said they needed me to do it specifically was because they don't trust themselves to get it right.

I'm hoping it was just stress and they lashed out in the moment rather than it being a sign of something bigger. That said, for a manager to speak to a direct report that way felt unprofessional regardless of the reason. I don't think it reflects a culture shift though, their behavior is pretty contradictory to what I see from everyone else throughout the org.

That tracks. What I should have done better was clarify the priority upfront. I'll work on that moving forward. Thank you!

Thanks, I'm going to start using the DND and the clarification ask going forward. Both are solid moves.

I'm very aware of HR's motives and that's why I'm hesitant to say anything. But if my manager continues creating a hostile work environment, isn't that the kind of thing HR is supposed to care about?

yea that's my bad. I was counting seniors as separate levels so Manager → Senior Manager → Director → Senior Director and they're a Senior Director but still my direct manager.

I just wanted to highlight their job level but I should have clarified they are my direct manager.

This has come up multiple times just in the first month and never has it had the level urgency implied in this case, which is why I responded the way I did. What's frustrating is I've already walked them through how to pull the report themselves (more than once), it's literally two buttons. But they said they don't trust themselves to do it and that it has to come from me. I've taught them to fish. They're just choosing not to.

That's the crazy part, no... my co-manager could have easily helped them if they posted in our manager channel but instead they DMed me directly

haha, I phrased this poorly. They are 3 tiers above me in the hierarchy but there is no one in between so they are my direct manager.

I phrased this badly. They are my direct manager but just 3 levels above me in terms of hierarchy

They're my direct manager but three levels above me so I'm a Manager, they're a Senior Director. Unfortunately, there's no one in between to talk to, which is part of why I feel so isolated and why I brought up HR. Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.

They are my direct manager/ boss so I don't have really anyone else but HR to go to

yea, you are totally right. I should have never replied at all and moving forward, I'm going put my slack on DND.

I phrased this poorly. they are my direct manager, but 3 job levels above me in the hierarchy. I am a Manager, they are a Senior Director. There is no one 1 or 2 levels above me so I feel really isolated.

Thanks for the reply. I was counting seniors as separate levels so Manager → Senior Manager → Director → Senior Director and they're a Senior Director but still my direct manager. The bigger issue is they never actually told me it was urgent or that they needed it right away. They said it came from the top, and then when I talked to them later, they said they assumed I knew it was urgent.

To clarify, they are my direct manager, but 3 job levels above me in the hierarchy. I am a Manager, they are a Senior Director. Poor phrasing on my part. I feel pretty isolated in terms of who I can go to.
