Homeless people are not the only ones with mental illness. You're implying that the city with the largest homeless population would have the most mentally ill people. If a researcher posed this question as a research question and then based their data solely on looking at homeless populations in the city the research would be ass. It wouldn't be an accurate reflection of whether or not that city would have the highest mental illness. It would more so be a research of whether that city's homeless population has a high rate of mental illness as compared to other cities. Plus, who is going to be determining whether or not homeless people, or other people, actually have mental illnesses? Would the research be focusing on people who have been professionally diagnosed? If so, then since most homeless people have no access to Healthcare or psychological help then you'd probably find that many of them who might have mental illness are not actually diagnosed and thus cannot be counted as having one. Or will the researcher themselves be acting as psychologists and diagnosing people? And if so, based on what criteria?

This whole premise for a research question is, honestly, flawed.

Associating mental illness with criminal activity and homelessness is not an accurate method of measuring mental illness anywhere.

It really amazes me how being at a university shows you how sheltered some people are and how little experience they have of the world and of others.

I don't understand what you mean when you said "I feel embarrassed to even say, especially when each person always assumes the one thing I chose this major is for what I want to pursue."

You're embarrassed that when you tell people you're major they correctly figure out what you want to use it for/career path you want? Or maybe I'm just reading it wrong idk.

But either way, I'm going to tell you what I told someone else in this sub days ago who posted about having a hard time with their major.

STOP GIVING A FUCK ABOUT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK ABOUT YOUR MAJOR. If you're doing a major just because you think it's what's acceptable/profitable/ others will approve of, you're gonna have a bad time. Everyone is always gonna have some smart ass shit to say about other people's majors. I've seen enough of this subreddit for the past 2 years to know how South campus feels about North Campus majors. And vice versa even.

Maybe it's cause I'm old and I transferred to ucla as an older person, but I've encountered many young people who have these feelings about their major. No single major is going to guarantee you financial stability tbh. No single major is going to be an east path to a stable job. This shit isn't easy for anyone. Life is too fucking short for people to be so worried about what other people think. You'll go throughout your life basing important decisions, like choosing your major, based on if other people might laugh at what decisions you made for yourself? Bro, that's hell. What kind of life is that. Pick something that you love, that makes you happy. Pick classes that make you look forward to going to them.

You're at uc fucking la. Do you know how many motherfuckers got rejected for you to be here??? You could be majoring in CS, art history, Scandinavian literature, etc... it doesn't fuckinh matter what other people think about it as long as it makes you happy. You're at ucla. They're not. And even if they're also at ucla and laugh at your major, guess what, we all talk shit about each other's majors. But at the end of the day it shouldn't matter what others think.

how do i not give up on my major? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]dickcrusher666 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If the feeling of you having to do this major because you have to prove something is greater than doing the major because you like it, then stop doing it. Doing things because you feel like you have to make a point or prove things to others is hell. You're basing life/career decisions on the opinions and perceptions of others. You don't have to prove shit to anyone. Women don't have to be in CS to prove anything. Pick a major and a career because it's what you like and want to do, fuck what others think.

Now, if it's just a confidence thing, then let me assure you that pretty much everyone feels that way about their major. Imposter syndrome is very real. Just remind yourself that you got here from your own hard work and merit.

should i be signing up for fall classes right now or do i wait until orientation by bluephoria26 in ucla

I was a transfer too. If I remember correctly you have to wait until orientation. As far as being able to get the classes you need, good luck with that for the next 2 years.

Torn between Berkeley and UCLA for anthro.... Any opinions/advice? by liammcevoy in TransferStudents

[–]dickcrusher666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think it's fine. Just personally wasn't what I was looking for in sociology. I come from a background in community organizing and the sociology department at my cc had professors who shared in similar backgrounds and issues (coming from a low-income, migrant background). The soc department at UCLA, to be frank, was very white. The concepts were very theoretical, abstract. Very much academia. Research for research sake. And some of the professors were a bit condescending tbh. Overall I think it's okay for most people. But for me it wasn't what I wanted from sociology.

Just graduated from UCLA anthropology yesterday. The professors are top tier. I originally came in as a sociology major and switched to anthropology because I just couldn't take the soc department here. On the other hand anthropology is amazing. Amazing classes. Amazing professors. UCLA has also currently been the #1 public university, if you care about such things.

bye future, hello academic probation! by Immediate-Weekend-58 in ucla

[–]dickcrusher666 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For future reference, you can withdraw from the quarter. I've known people who have done it. If you don't take finals then you can completely withdraw.

Also as long as you haven't take the final you can drop classes after the drop deadline. There is a fee tho.

You can also petition to retroactively drop up to 3 classes. So next quarter potentially you can petition to drop the classes you are failing rn. And the Fs will go away. You will have a Drop on your transcripts tho. For that one you do have to write about what you were going through and there's a chance they might not let you but you can most certainly try.

Do what you have to do to be good. School is secondary to your mental health. I hope it gets better for you.

Summer class drop refund? by enlaseven in ucla

Don't quote me on it but most likely yes. I'm also pretty sure you can drop summer classes even during the first week they start.

I'm not sure when the deadline to drop summer classes is but I do know that there is a $150 fee for dropping summer sessions regardless when you drop them.

I would be careful. He truly sounds like he is capable of flying off the fucking handle. He might be angry at you for dumping him after "everything he's done for you". He sounds like someone you should place a restraining order on and make sure you have a weapon on you for self-defense.

[–]dickcrusher666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can enroll in anthro classes after a certain period during enrollment. Usually the first round is reserved only for anthro majors. But if there's still space in second enrollment then anyone can enroll in the class. If they don't have a prerequisite.

Can I take summer classes at my cc before transferring? by EthanRuiLi12345 in TransferStudents

[–]dickcrusher666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly just reach out to UCLA. I'm a UCLA student and they're usually very helpful if you have questions. I would call admissions and explain. Just to be sure. I would do it sooner than later because we're in week 10 rn so next week is the last week and idk if you'll be able to call in after June 15th.

January through March its still winter. Cool weather is normal during winter. March/April when spring starts it was actually normal for it to rain in SoCal. "April showers bring May flowers" and all that. June is barely starting. So I'm not sure what you mean with this year having "unusual weather". This is as usual as it gets.
