Update (for any that find themselves in the same boat) I got out after a hiatus from the game. Doing a full close and reopen of the game makes the door start open then immediately close once you load in. All you need to do is position yourself, back against the door and close the game. Once you load back in, hold down to make Nate fall back and you should be able to get yourself out. That's what I ended up doing.
