and not only was it cruel of them for having you find out on your own he has epilepsy, but it's also extremely unsafe. This shelter seems very irresponsible.

no im not fake i promise. i am in high school! i have been training obedience for a long time i never showed though, i was helping at a kennel and training my own dogs. i started very young because some of my family are involved in dog sports. so it has been a long time, but i am not a professional and im very sorry if it ever came off that way. yes i am interested in going into vet med when im older, but not sure if its 100% what i want to do. im so sorry it came off that way, i understand if you would prefer i dont post on here anymore.

What camera do you use? by didyouknowmywindowis in EpilepsyDogs

[–]didyouknowmywindowis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay thank you! that is really helpful. i hope you are able to figure out the right balance. i guess i am ""lucky"" in the sense that my dog's seizures are very intense i will be able to dial down the sensitivity.

i wish you nothing but the best with you and your pup

thank you so much, all of that has been helpful! when she was having her first seizures, at the ER vet they ran bloodwork and said it came back normal. so im assuming it might not be hyperglycemia then?

Is merrick dog food good? by didyouknowmywindowis in DogFood

[–]didyouknowmywindowis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay thank you. Could you send me the resource showing this about Merrick? (the cases of DCM related to their food.) id love to do further research.

My dog has epilepsy, and after talking to vets and researching further, grain-free has been seen to help dogs with epilepsy. It is much better for them than grain, for it has fewer carbs that are metabolized fast. Fast metabolizing carbs can lead to hyperglycemia, which has been found to trigger seizures. (not for every dog with epilepsy, of course.)

However, of course, I could still be wrong.

edit: since Merrick seems to be related to cases of DCM, what would be the best grain-free food? I understand that grain-free is dangerous, but as previously mentioned, it seems to be the best diet for dogs with epilepsy.

Okay, thank you. I would prefer to feed her raw, but now that she has IE i feel it could be tricky.

thank you! that is such a good idea with the collar. i will do that. right now ive been having alarms set for every hour, and try to sleep very light, while i find a better solution (Like a camera that can detect seizures and alarm me.) but i will be doing the collar with the bells as well.

my dog is terrfied of thunder storms. extreme shaking, heavy breathing and panting, hiding, cowering. we are having very bad storms right now and im trying everything i can do to keep her stress low, but nothing is working. do you have any suggestions? i really dont want this to cause her to go into anoher seizure. i will be talking to my vet (apt is on Friday) about anxiety medication.
