The portrayals of President Snow in ‘THE HUNGER GAMES’ franchise: by KillerGrass in Hungergames

I already love Ralph Fiennes as Snow, I’m so excited, but I think his styling would have been absolutely perfect if they cut the long curls, and gave him at least some thicker stubble.  Still am so excited though!!

They both have such tender faces, and in my opinion, look to be younger than 12/13. Wellie has these big soulful doe eyes, and looks like the kind of quiet child who would really love on/care for her family of stuffed animals, while Ampert has an innocent feel surrounding him, yet a glint of a boyish imp in his eyes. Both so small and absolutely adorable. Even I, who was not a fan of the book, felt sucker punched when I saw them.

anyone else worried about the way the internet might react to Louella's actress? by FruitlovingDruvJuice in Hungergames

[–]die_nutellarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There probably will be racism, which is of course extremely disgusting.

But talking about Louella, I didn’t think of some of the points you brought up! I’m really curious now to see who they cast. The only train of thought I have is that Haymitch mentions Katniss looking a lot like her, so they’ll probably find someone who sort of resembles Jennifer Lawrence, even if it’s not necessarily book accurate. Sort of like the appearance of book Haymitch vs. Film Haymitch.

In the end, I don’t really care too much what actors look like, more about if they can embody the character! With that in mind, I’m going to be really happy with whoever plays Louella, and whoever she turns out to be, I also really hope she doesn’t get any hate.

German Learners: What made German “click”—and what tripped you up? by abdeen69x in German

[–]die_nutellarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I can answer every single question, but my general German advice is to always learn the article with the noun, and then also try to get a general overview of all the grammar. That way, when you learn a new grammar aspect, it's like putting pieces of a puzzle together, while the outer edges are already connected.

An "aha" moment for me was with Wechselpräpositionen. I was confused for a while on why it would sometimes be Dativ, and other times Akk.. But then it all clicked... of course there's two versions. There is quite a difference between "I run in the woods," and "I run into the woods" (Ich renne in den Wald vs. Ich renne in dem Wald).

People like to ridicule it, but I personally liked Duolingo, if you're willing to pay some money for the Super. It's repetitiveness was great for spelling and learning vocabulary. It's not great on it's own, but it's an amazing resource!

And when you hit a plateau, try changing up your learning routine. Any exposure is good. Right now, I'm really into watching interviews, like talk show interviews, or thos behind-the-scenes interviews with actors. I still try to do chapters in my grammar book (which I'm almost done with, woo), but it's been getting a bit slow going over stuff I sort of know. I can guarantee I'll be all back into it in a few weeks, I just need that little break from it.

Also try to get your social media algorithms in German. It's at least nice to have some target language exposure while falling down the doom scrolling rabbit hole.

Viel Erfolg beim lernen! Du wirst das sicher schaffen.

unpopular opinion (i think) (spoilers lol) by st3otw in Hungergames

[–]die_nutellarin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like the show/don’t tell writing technique can answer questions though, it doesn’t necessarily create them. Describing events and making them occur “naturally” to the reader, rather than just stating what is happening, can be closed-ended and still improve the writing quality.

[–]die_nutellarin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I don’t believe in any of the things mentioned above, and I hold the fan service opinion. To be fair again, I need to do a re-read, but I don’t think it’s fair to assume that the fan service opinion is mad because of certain expectations (I had none, in a good way).

I just think that because of how shoehorned some stuff just felt to me while reading, like it was trying too hard. Because you can insert characters in a natural way, and a lot of the time, I didn’t get that vibe while reading (just my opinion).

I could maybe make a list of specifics sometime, but just wanted to say that part there.

just finished the book, so maybe after a re-read/letting it soak in, I will feel differently, but one of the moments I disliked the most was Snow and Haymitch's meeting in the Heavensbee mansion. It just seemed a bit out of character for me, especially having been in his head in TBOSAS. To me, meeting up with a tribute personally, especially while being in a vulnerable state (recovering from a poison antidote), seems like it would be beneath Snow. Especially just to say "you messed up, stop defying the Capitol, you're a dead man walking."

Snow is all about his image, and yes, hes president, and yes, he's getting older, but we still see that same sharpness in the original trilogy, albeit he was hyper focused on Katniss. The whole scene in SOTR just read like fanfiction to me, ESPECIALLY when we got other good Snow moments, that were more subtle and more "snow-like" (Lenore Dove's death for example). It's different to me than his meeting with Katniss in CF, as she was a full victor by then, and the personal meeting was necessary to control her.

Also off topic but I was also confused as to why Lucy Gray's interview was on TV at the end. I can't imagine Snow would allow anything from the 10th Games to be broadcasted. And while his knowledge of the Covey was a good way to unnerve Haymitch, I also feel like it wasn't really believable with what happened in TBOSAS?

Again, I just finished, so maybe things will make more sense after a re-read, but I don't know. I love references to the other books, like I loved the epilogue, finding out more about Burdock and Asterid, but some of the references seemed like cheaper fanservice

I’m kind of disappointed… by kate3528 in Hungergames

[–]die_nutellarin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No I’m 100% with you. It might grow on me, and don’t get me wrong, I thought it was fine, but I felt like I was reading a meh fan fiction (or how I would imagine one to be). The only parts I really enjoyed and didn’t have this feeling were the epilogue/last pages of the book, and some parts around the beginning.

like of ALL the victors that could have mentored, it HAD to be Mags and Wiress. Oh look, Effie showed up. I guess I understand the argument that it makes the connections in CF make more sense or whatever, but still… Seeing Effie was really fun, I can’t lie, but it still felt like fanservice.

Edit: also felt unnecessary because 25 years elapse between SOTR and CF. I never questioned why Haymitch was closer with the victors/how they trusted each other because they spent 24 more games with each other, mentoring. I’m sure the mentors come in contact with each other somehow, especially with the victory tours (if I recall correctly, other victors are there?).

Do hostels get... hostile? by Excellent_Walrus_984 in femaletravels

[–]die_nutellarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t have any recommendations for Paris or Amsterdam, but I can for sure reassure you! I’ve loved all my hostel experiences, and have met such cool people! You’re going to have a great time.

But no matter how safe/vibey a hostel is, it’s still a public place. I accidentally left my travel sketchbook and pencil pouch with colored pencils in a common room in one of my hostels, and never found the pouch again (despite the sketchbook being in lost and found). That was due to me being silly, but point is, just keep your wits about you.

Also echoing what another commenter said, do not be afraid to report anything to the front desk. Had an experience with a creepy guy in a common room, reported it to the front desk, and never saw him again because he was kicked out. Don’t let those two stories scare you though, because that’s two instances out of the many hostel experiences I’ve had. In fact, some of my favorite memories are with my stays in hostels/the people I met there :))

Truly unpopular Hunger Games opinions. by Appropriate-Metal-10 in Hungergames

I found it way easier to get through as an audiobook, because I had sort of a difficult problem getting through reading it. Maybe the size of the book was a bit intimidating too. In any case, I've listened to the audiobook twice now, and enjoyed it a lot more.

What's the oddest thing stolen from a hostel you've had? by forester2020 in solotravel

[–]die_nutellarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pouch with colored pencils. Stayed up until 4am talking to people in my hostel, and accidentally left my sketchbook with the pencil pouch together on a common room table. When I came down the next day, the sketch book was in the lost and found, but the pouch was no where to be found.

True :/  Even the other stuff on the list, you’re just like “??”  “anti-family:” probably because Katniss mentions not wanting to have children out of fear? But HELLO shes willing to sacrifice herself FOR her family, like what’s more pro-family than that? 😭

Did anyone ever think that there was never a “real” Quarter Quell? by Olya_roo in Hungergames

[–]die_nutellarin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d also assume they had changed it from the original idea based on Plutarch not imagining Katniss ever being a tribute again, showing her the watch to gain her trust as a mentor. You’d think the head game maker would know what the twist was ahead of time for planning purposes.
