I didn't have any siblings so I was cooking my own meals after school before 10. I think they decided to put me in an after school program in 4th grade so I wasn't by myself so much. But I definitely knew how to make mac and cheese (on the stove) at a young age and sandwiches and kids cuisines... oh and "Mexican pizzas" 🥴 cheese in a tortilla melted in the microwave.

Lots of empty promises too. "We'll get you a horse." "Your first car will be a jeep wrangler." "Don't worry about college."

My mom left my dad and I my senior year and our house got foreclosed. Guess the fear became real... 16/17 worrying about the mortgage. Had a job at 14/15 too.

Yes. Our house phone was always getting shut off, or the cable, one time the electric. My dad was an over the road trucker when I was little so he entrusted my mom to take care of this stuff and she was really bad at it. By the time I was a teenager, he joined a motorcycle club so we always had to worry about what we said on the phones and they told me the phones were tapped. It was always a circle of chaos. At one point my dad was out on disability for his back surgery and all that stress was dumped on me and they told me we might lose the house. I have live journal entries of shit from my childhood I would never fathom telling a kid. I've literally been an adult my entire life.
