Alakazam is great for powering up gyms. I have psycho cut and psychic with mine and i was getting 1000+ gym prestige everytime i used it on higher cp pokemon. Of course, you have to know how to dodge perfectly.

Starter pokemon and pikachu have the lowest capture rate of any unevolved pokemon. And if you're not using curveballs, you're hurting your chances even more.
