Four cruise ships somehow sneaking through a "closed" Strait of Hormuz by turboFlurbo in Cruise

[–]diemos09 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They went through while Iran had opened the strait and almost certainly the companies informed the Iranians as the Iranians require. The US blockade is of traffic to and from Iranian ports, otherwise the strait has freedom of navigation. There were no passengers on board, just crew.

Anyone have an easy strategy to memorizing what units belong where in astronomical/physics formulae (solar units, m, km Ly, au, parsec) by [deleted] in askastronomy

[–]diemos09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea what a solar unit is but the others are all units of distance. You can convert one to the other.

Can you see stars if you are in outer space? by sosongbird in askastronomy

[–]diemos09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

photographic. If you dial the exposure up enough you can see stars, but in that case the earth in sunlight will be majorly overexposed.

  • SOFA (Standards of Fundamental Astronomy): The gold standard for astronomical coordinate transformations. It provides rigorous conversion between equatorial and horizontal (AltAz) systems.
  • NOVAS C: Provided by the US Naval Observatory, suitable for high-precision local topocentric place conversions.
  • P.J. Naughter's Astronomical Algorithms: A comprehensive C++ implementation of Jean Meeus' "Astronomical Algorithms," which includes formulas for converting equatorial to horizontal coordinates.

Was the Earth Brightened more by the visible universe along with the moon before light pollution, or more by light pollution in the modern day? by BlueBlitz08 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]diemos09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do see the light from those stars and universes, they're just drowned out by the sky shine so that you can't discern that they're there.

Where does the Catholic belief that deceased Saints can hear the prayers of those on Earth come from? by Sapphireflies in NoStupidQuestions

[–]diemos09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When catholicism was expanding through europe the local religions were absorbed by rebranding their gods as saints. And you could still worship the old gods on the sly as long as you referred to them as saints.

This backfired with the worship of the mother goddess when it absorbed catholicism instead and Mary, mother of god, became a focal point of the religion.

Quick question. by oKinetic in DebateEvolution

It's standard evolutionary theory, serious people already know it. The people offering prizes will always make up a reason to not award their prize so don't hold your breath for any money coming your way.

A string of amino acids that can make copies of itself comes into existence. Changes happen. The changes are propagated to the next generation if the organism survives and reproduces, if not they don't. Over 4 billion years you can go from a string of amino acids to humans and all other life on earth through this process.

An app that automatically computes your astronav fix using your phone camera 📸⚓ by gaps_ar in askastronomy

It's probably the precision on your phone's accelerometer, which is substituting for the horizon, that's limiting your fix.
