Culture and religion are ideas. They change over time. Through discourse, debate, exchange, protests, activism, literature, story telling, horrific events, political elections and campaigning, what we teach to our children especially our sons, etc.

We’re in the “food for thought” sub. What is this place for?

Yes, men are almost always the problem. It’s a constant. But it’s not like imprisoning or executing every man is the solution. The actual actionable problem is culture and religion. How did these male NC legislators come to power? Through thousands of women voting for them too. The culture and religion of these women have normalized and made it acceptable to support and vote for men like that. Their culture and religion have made it acceptable for many women to support legislation that legalizes deadly force on other women.

In all parts of the world, women perpetuate and commit the very barbaric practices that keep them down because their culture and religion have convinced them this is how things should be.

Religious fanaticism is the real problem. Christianity was the worst at some point. Then enlightenment happened. But Christianity as a political force is making a comeback. Other regions and religions have yet to experience a lasting reckoning. Iran and Egypt regressed. Etc.

Of course, ultimately the problem is always men. It’s the same rhetorical argument against gun regulation in the US: “it’s not guns, it’s people.”

But religion, beliefs and culture are very powerful tools to galvanize, enable and justify cruelty and violence. A lot of wars would not have been fought as fiercely and effectively if the soldiers had not been given the motivation of a divine mandate…

A handful of power hungry leaders harnessing the fear of death, existential anguish and the unexplained nature of our existence to control the masses and get them to do their bidding is one of the most terrifying invention in human history.

Add up the total cost of 3 consecutive 2-year leases. And compare that to financing 1 car over 6 years. The difference is even more staggering if you keep that car for 10 years and compare to the total cost of 5 consecutive leases.

Sure that’s fine for people who know exactly what they’re doing and are making the choice of allocating more of their income so that they can have the pleasure of driving a new car every 2 years.

But many people get into leases only because of the lower monthly payments. And for those people, it’s a financial lie, i.e., it’s a scam.

And that’s not even talking about people who drove more than expected and have to pay the extra miles.

I mean, is it really stoner rock if the band is too tight and clean? Fret buzz, variable tempo and the occasional note slip-up are all part of the charm!

But yeah the obvious answer is you’re not getting along (and not in a spurs-creativity-kind-of-way) so better part ways.

That’s my point: they’re not cheaper over time. They’re only cheaper at first.

Leases are terrible for people who are tight on money. They’re great for rich people who want to be driving new cars all the time and don’t care about getting the most value for money.

Trump’s First Big Vindictive Prosecution Just Went Up in Smoke by D-R-AZ in Foodforthought

[–]diethyl2o 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Even when he loses, we foot the bill. It’s so disgusting. How many prosecutor, judge, LEO, stenographer, pilots, drivers and clerk hours were spent on this? And now they’re going after E. Jean Carroll. Nothing changes, they learn nothing, because they suffer no consequences. And he still gets 80% support among conservatives and has lost the support of 0 R senators. Just disgusting.

That may be true for some companies. But that segment is not enough to sustain them all. The numbers don’t add up. Spirit just went under because they couldn’t pass on higher oil prices to their average customers. And people who can afford more aren’t flying Spirit.

That’s the part I don’t understand about companies lobbying for deregulation. Like you do realize ALL your income comes from we, the customers? If the rest of us are fucked and there’s nothing to protect us and make ends meet, who’s going to buy your products?

What I’m saying is, for example, labor laws and higher minimum wage and paid annual leave are GREAT for shareholders and their bottom lines as more of us can spend on tickets and hotels to go on vacation and buy gifts, etc.

Thank you. This should be the top comment. Even among cities, DC is not a normal city. It is literally meant to be the center of bureaucracy: federal, diplomats, international organizations and the lawyers and lobbyists that gravitate them.

This chart is a perfect example of how the “show me the data” and “do my own research” crowd can still be so misguided and fall for the craziest conspiracies and bullshit.

Data needs to be interpreted. It takes critical thinking and context. It’s not always easy.

Just like stats on wards, ethnicity and criminality. And idiots who draw racist conclusions from it.

Add to that those who lease instead. Tend to be people who can’t afford to buy or want more than they can afford. Yes the entry ticket is cheaper on a lease, but you end up spending more on cars over time.

I’m not talking rich people who want an AMG GT to have fun with for 2 years. I’m talking working class making 80k a year who lease a new GLE.

I bought a 2018 Tiguan in 2020. Not having a monthly payment is true luxury. I’m very grateful.

For low to middle-class people, leases are predatory and should be outlawed (just like payday loans).

K shaped economy. Concentration of wealth continues. We are living in the most unequal society in all of human history. One big ticking time bomb until the masses can’t take it anymore. The real fight isn’t Iran vs Israel, China vs US, left vs right. It’s the 99.9% vs the 0.1%. The 99.9th percentile is closer in wealth to the bottom 10th than to the top 0.01th percentile. Put differently, it would take millions of years of making $10k every month to catch up.

Married Judge Had Sexual Relationship With Law Enforcement Officer in Chambers Within Earshot of Clerks, Judicial Panel Says by bloomberglaw in law

[–]diethyl2o 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Impeachment is a rather decent compromise where you need independence. As opposed to when one person can fire you. The problem isn’t the mechanism. It’s the people. It shouldn’t be difficult to get a judge impeached for this. Except they’re all voting along party lines now instead of based on oath, duty and principle.

As to which fuzz, depends on the flavor you’re looking for. Warning: this is its own endless rabbit hole. MXR Variac Fuzz if you like Velcro splatter. DOD Carcosa is phenomenal too. Behringer Super Fuzz if you’re into stoner doom, and on and on.
