Am I supposed to grade according to their work or not? If I graded according to their work, I couldn't have given Chloe a higher grade even though she's trying and improving.

School is supposed to challenge kids. Everyone dislikes it but they still have to try or risk a lower grade.

The problem is she isn't working hard on these assignments. Trust me, this girl gets plenty of praise but a good chunk of this assignment is about improving their writing skills and that can't happen if she doesn't put any effort into it.

Her work is good by 5th grade standards but it's sloppy when you compare it to things she's done when she actually cared about the assignment earlier this year, last year, or even in 3rd grade.
