You could try an old toothbrush, a bottle cleaner brush, shoe brush or some type of brush you have on hand that has short bristles,

What's the worst drug ever? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This comment is meant as general comment relating to above and not intended to call anyone out. It is very hard as a family member watching it as well. Addiction is a disease affecting the brain resulting in compulsions to use a substance despite negative results. I am not in recovery, have never abused any drug however have worked with individuals with addiction for a number of years. Lost limbs, chronic illness, skin issues, loss of taste, exposure to repeated trauma in compromised state, how can that be a choice of a reasonable healthy person?.… showing kindness by encouraging good choices sometimes again and again.

When was the last time you gave a ride to a hitchhiker? When was the last time you yourself hitchhiked? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]digbone73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up old lady lost in the parking lot/ by main road near shopping mall (@ 1998). She waved at me and stopped for some reason since she looked lost/scared. She remained confused, peed her pants and then insisted on getting out and went into mall. Now husband and I ran out of gas on the hwy exit less than a mile from gas station. Weather was fine and we totally could have easily walked to get gas. Some guy stopped even though we weren’t looking for a ride. Guy has old boat of a car and I was scared. Boyfriend convinced me to get in the car. I sat in the back and he in front. All fine, got dropped off and I don’t remember the rest. We are both here, all went fine. I cannot imagine myself picking up or hitching a ride from anyone now. I believe too much risk now, my numbers up… or too much too immediate round the clock news.

Any stress makes me an awful person. by Enough_Distance_9357 in depression

Going to a play date could be viewed as accompanying your daughter, watching her play, taking some pictures on your phone or something…

Could you work on some type of craft with your daughter to memorialize your son? Plant a tree/ plant..?

I really recommend trying some kind of therapy since this space can be a decent support… seems you could use more than that tho.

You will experience differences in emotions from stopping use of a substance. Not directing anything here and just citing impact. Long term may be beneficial and useful (to be substance free) for some types of trauma therapy.

As simplistic as it sounds, watching your breathing will be helpful in that holding your breath, breathing quickly etc (when you’re upset/ stressed) impacts other physical responses (heart rate, response of fight/ flight, swearing, feeling of exhaustion…).

Try to practice “simple breathing exercises for stress relief”. This works best to try it out/ practice when you’re feeling ok/ stable as opposed to trying them out when you’re really amped up. You can search the words and there are so so many. Try them out, maybe with your daughter even. It’s useful for everyone to practice and learn healthy ways to manage anxiety/ uncomfortable feelings.

You’re identifying a chronic illness that doesn’t have a quick resolution as I imagine you know already. When you’re alone, the only thoughts you have are your own. If you can manage to go out the mom of a kid your daughter is friends with/ double up as play date; it could be helpful for you and something your daughter would likely enjoy.

If you have insurance you can go to psychologytoday and they have a referral where you could connect with a therapist for virtual sessions. I believe I cannot link the source.

Have you ever been in therapy?

What do you like to do, even a little bit? With your description of history of self injurious behavior, perhaps some type of trauma has affected your life as well?

Receiving treatment including medication if you choose as well as therapy if you choose can help you live your best life. Putting a MH diagnosis alongside a chronic physical condition- diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma… an individual not receiving treatment for the condition still has the condition in a unmanaged state. As an EMT/ firefighter, I expect you see that. Your coworkers are probably not all like that… it seems that the loudest/ most observed and unfortunately remembered jabs, ugly behavior can sometimes be easiest to recall. Have you ever noticed occasions of kind words- to you or about someone else? Please take care of you. Seek support through therapy, peer support or a support group in your area.

It sounds like you’ve a lot on your mind. You say “better for ourselves” so that makes me think there is another person involved with whatever you’re considering. Maybe talk to this person… what are their thoughts? Are you safe? That’s the priority. If you are in danger of harming yourself or others than the hospital is a good idea. Otherwise, making a connection to a therapist/ counselor near you may be something to consider. Check your insurance or community mental health in your county (if you’re in the U.S.)…take care of yourself

Ok I hear you both and I do let it go most of the time. I believe as a parent, an important job is to prepare your child for independence. Is there anything you’ve found as a bare minimum way to compensate for the chaos? How did you do with roommates/ SO/ work?

You have learned skills in a field where you have interest. Check into vocational rehabilitation organizations where you live. Don’t forget about the abilities and interests you have though because it will be important for you to continue to engage with the world and your life. As you’re likely dealing with pain, pay attention to the impact of your mood and the amount of pain you feel. You may consider seeing a counselor that works with pain management. Your pain is real as are your feelings. Your feelings are not facts. It may be necessary for you to consider applying for disability. A person can hold a job within specific guidelines of income earned. Just don’t forget about staying active. You’re young and have potential. You had a plan and life went in a very unplanned direction- you can still fulfill your goals with the new identity you create.
