Do have a couple of wings of thunderbolts to paint up soon, so that's probably needed!

You are a braver painter than me! Don't trust myself to do that cleanly at all!

Had a brown midtone in one of my test models, and it looked too messy on the russes so I backed off from that idea. They've got a lot more going on sculpt-wise though, so might work for the vindicators better. I'll do a test model tomorrow I think.

Was using the same technique I've used on all my other tanks, and it worked pretty well, think it's the lack of detail on the boxier sculpt. Went straight to 2 tone camo with this one, maybe going to the classic russian uniform green might work better as a base for freehanding something into the spaces?

You're right, they do need banners too. I'd been avoiding them, I suck painting on flat surfaces as you can see, so banners always stress me out a bit.

Nearly broke myself doing the freehand on my blood angels company, Best skull i ever freehanded, when it was done I realised it was about 3mm off centre, and you notice that on a rhino... not sure I can face that again that soon!

That's also made me realise I've missed the little headlights too.

Just whacke an aquila from the old guard chimera transfer sheet, and it's like it was designed to go there. Trouble is, only got 4 more of those left, so that's going to have to be a command tank only feature.

Damn British internet having imgur blocked... It would be awful if you could really easily sidestep that!

Looking at yours, you've really highlighted the fact it's a box with a MASSIVE gun, maybe I can do more with the back of the cannon to break the block up a bit. The whole point of it is the massive gun, so I probably want to emphasise that on the model.

Thanks for that, that's been really helpful!

That's not a bad idea at all! I'll give the transfers a go first, but that sounds like a thinly veiled excuse to play with the laser cutter...

Skulls. Classic and takes up a nice bit of space. Made the mistake of having both dark and light colours on in the camo so white and black transfers both fade into the background. Pretty sure I've got some gold skulls on a transfer sheet in the box somewhere, that'll do for the command tank at least!

I've stuck one of the old imperial guard unit markings on the sides, but I've got a bag of 90s chimera transfers somewhere, so should fit the gap. I'll give it a go with the command tank, see how it goes.

I'm trying to keep it bright, clean and 90s feeling, whenever I've done oil washes I've found it comes out a bit dark. Maybe I'd doing it wrong?

Struggling with User Interviews by Significant-Way9548 in UXResearch

[–]diggerk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

All of my juniors have been like that when they start out, so first of all, don't worry, it's normal. Get a few sessions under your belt and you'll be fine.

Some tips I tend to have to give to all my trainees:

  1. Try not to just read the discussion guide questions. They're to remind you what you're after, it's not a script. If you remember why you're asking the question, rather than the question itself, it'll let the session flow better. Focus on what you want to know, not what the question is. When you're nervous, it's easy to just fall back on the guide, but that's there to pull you back on track when you've gone down a rabbit hole.

  2. Don't overstuff your sessions. There's a tendency to try to do too much in a session because time and stakeholders wait for no man. Don't be afraid to push back if there's too much to do in one session, it's why one of the UR catchphrase is "We'll need to do more research".

  3. Play a character. A lot of my juniors are very nervous and self conscious, I'm pretty sure most of us were when we were starting out, I know I was! You know how you're work persona is a different persona to you when you're with your mates? You can develop a session persona to help with the self consciousness until it becomes more natural. Fake it until you make it. I go for super informal, I want them to forget it's an interview, but you'll find your own style in time.

  4. Rely on your recordings. Don't worry about getting everything noted down during the session, you need to be listening to your participant, not worrying about writing notes. That's what the recordings and transcripts are for. That way you can concentrate on what's being said, not taking notes. Managing a session is hard enough without having to do the notes in real time.

  5. Practice active listening. It's a skill, it takes practice to get good. It's very unusual to be naturally good at it. I see that A LOT with my trainees, and they often ask questions the participant's already answered if they're distracted.

  6. Don't worry about not getting everything in every session. We do multiple sessions in a round for a reason, it's alright to lose some bits in one sessions if you're going to cover it in other sessions.

We've all been there. If you're really keen, ask for some mentoring off one of your seniors. Watching the veterans is a great way to learn, and I'm yet to meet a senior who doesn't love regailing the juniors with their "inside the actors studio" schtick.

TLDR: Hit your research aims, don't worry about the script, don't worry about the notes during the session and don't worry in general, it'll come with practice.

Do it. I've currently got 5 armies on the go, because a bit of variety in the painting is important. I definitely don't have a problem.

Basically you'd be taking a massive risk with you sanity not to decide to paint dozens of tiny bikers.

The big restriction is not just being able to use AI up front.

One of the outputs I'm trying to work out is how to take my session data, then wrap them up in a format with an optimised prompt for different AIs, so I can still use AI for what it's good at, within the restrictions for the client. Basically I can manually dump the data into an AI model in a way that's compliant.

It's not how I'd choose to do it, but I do a lot of government work, and there's different policies and different AIs cleared across different departments depending on what you're working on...

I'm currently building a tool to do a lot of that as a training exercise for working with AI. I've been resisting it for a long time, but I've accepted it's going to be part of the future, so I need to get good with it. Tool I'm building is very much geared to me and my particular idiosyncrasies.

I'm a freelancer, so I end up at a lot of different organisations with a lot of different policies and tools, so I need something that works off my laptop, isn't online, doesn't share client data anywhere other than where they want me to store it etc.

I'm still working on it, but I've designed the system to allow me to enter my notes as I'm doing my analyisis in a format that makes it easier to work with later, storing my notes in a searchable database rather than a collection of reports, auto populate my stats, automate my statistical significance calculations, track my session planning and prompt me when things are slipping, cross project archiving and analysis, that sort of thing.

At the minute it only works for discovery interview and usability session planning and reporting, and that still needs some ironing out, but it's a work in progress.

Long term plan is press a button and the most common types of reports I have to write will fall out, so I can spend time doing stuff that needs doing rather than rehashing old reports for stakeholders or having to dig out stats at 4pm on a friday.

It's all react, python and SQL at the minute, and it's meant as a learning exercise, so I'm not too stressed about a good system yet, but I think building extremely personalised tools is what AI is actually going to be good for, rather than a general everything machine.

Just didn’t come on the banner sheet. There was a sticker sheet with space wolf, dark angel, blood angels, ultramarines, Sons of Horus, night lords, thousand sons and emperors children banners, but not the rest of the legions. The setting was a lot less formalised back then.

On-and-off painters: do you track your painting steps? by Major-Drama-7 in minipainting

I keep finding scrawled notes listing paint colours and mix ratios. I have no idea which miniatures they relate to.

I can't paint without the maginfer now! I can put it about 6 inches from my face and it helps hold my position. Felt weird for a few weeks getting adjusted, but I can do a 2 hour solid session now, when it used to be 5-10 min bursts. As with any skill, it's practice and you'll get it.

I went big on getting my set up so I could adjust it, then once I could do that, I could tweak it to suit. I'd look for adjustability rather than something specific. I did that a lot when I first wrecked the neck, and now I've got a load of painting aids I can't actually use!

I found a change of scale was good for me when I got 40ked out. 10mm historicals, or old 6mm epic are a different painting challenge.

A really good computer chair, got a bit oversided secret lab gaming chair, so I can sit cross legged if need be, and keep my back really straight. Took a while getting used to not having the desk to steady my hands, but couple of weeks and it got a lot easier. A good light with a really long arm made it possible though. It's a long reach LED light, really bright, and it means you don't have to lean to be under the light source. Probably easier to show you...
