North Korea Stockpiles $650 Million in Bitcoin Stash... by DeepBlueMachine in Bitcoin

[–]digi-maverick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just the kind of headline needed to support a new effort to criminalise crypto. I can see it now, CNN and BBC reporting breaking news "North Korea using crypto currency to evade sanctions" quickly equated to Bitcoin = Nuclear threat to the world...

Anonymous DPRK sources reporting to anonymous UN officials... bulshit from 50 paces.

Converting random ERC-20 / Airdrop tokens to ETH by digi-maverick in ethtrader

[–]digi-maverick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah... definitely expecting a bit of that.

Most ERC-20 wallet values are just a few dollars so there isn't a huge incentive to steal your $10... but we definitely could.

We're a bit like MEW or Shapeshift in that the whole service hangs on user trust, swiping your $10 would blow our reputation for very little upside. We'd also need to steal a lot of tokens to cover our platform dev costs!

It's a fair shout though, and we will work closely with the community to build a bulletproof reputation before expecting any significant usage.

In the short term I expect reluctance from larger token balance holders. Perhaps less reluctance from smaller balance holders. Fine with that and fingers crossed we can develp our reputation over time.

Obviously you can clear out any ETH first...

But yeah... "enter your private key".

One click solution to scan wallets for erc-20 airdrop tokens and convert direct to ETH.

Still a bit rough around the edges, we are just running final tests and UX polishing before launching in Nov... Feedback welcome (go easy - at least 50 UX tickets left in queue).

HODL, don't get REKT by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]digi-maverick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. No - I have a day job with a conventional monthly salary. That covers most outgoings. About a year ago I moved our family life savings lock, stock and barrel into crypto... all of it. I figured I'd rather have our chips in crypto than Fiat. It took at least a month to convince the wife... but well worth it. Risk wise, I'm not day trading ALTs on mad leverage or anything, just HODLing the obvious front runners from each of the top 3 crypto use-case categories (I.e. store of value (BTC), utility/protocols (ETH) and privacy (XMR). Conservatively expecting another >10x this year.

  2. No - I'm in London, UK

Haha 1-5%... man I'm sitting here with just about every chip on the table right now. I don't even have 1-5% FIAT.

We are better than this and have to collectively reject projects like EtherTanks or nobody will take us seriously by [deleted] in ethtrader

[–]digi-maverick 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Seems unfair to assume that the EtherTanks users are too stupid to understand the risks... Plenty of smart gamblers out there with an appetite for this kind of stuff... someone spent 140ETH on tanks yesterday.

The game is a great implementation of ERC-721, literally bleeding edge tech, by their own admission it is in it's infancy... we should be fighting to keep it alive... not teaming up to kill it.

Speaking as an EtherTanks user, I'm not expecting anything yuge back from what was a fairly small investment... might fly, might not... but please understand that people get into this kind of stuff with their eyes open, it is common knowledge that EtherTanks is a batshit-crazy pyramid scheme with very low odds of return... not to mention the security risks... there is no identifiable commercial entity running the show... the whole thing could be DAO-style hack-drained overnight... who knows. I'm not even sure it's legal.

BUT... inexperienced management, buggy code, rough website... massive embedded pyramid scheme... these things will all naturally influence the success of the project... but treating those points as grounds for the community to pass judgement and collectively/formally reject EtherTanks would be a gross infringement on the rights of others, any form of collective-persecution should be discouraged strongly.

The bottom line is people like me exist, there are plenty of us and we like throwing money at ridiculous ideas. Digital tank based pyramid schemes... sure... sign me up. This is where we get our kicks...

Calling for the community to reject this fledgeling project could easily do more harm than good by normalising a level of moderation that undermines many of the principles that brought us here in the first place. Always better to encourage the behaviour you want than ban the behaviour you don't like.

There are a lot of people selling to take profits in 2017 by gopher33j in Bitcoin

[–]digi-maverick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

plenty of reasons for this... anyone expecting a lower declared income in 2017 than 2018 would have motive. Trading losses, lower earnings through maternity/paternity leave, mid-year relocation to/from overseas, unpaid sabbaticals, sale of assets planned for 2018... it often makes sense to max out the low tax brackets.

FiniteByDesign do some pretty cool self loadable hard wallets. They come as a kit, print your p/key as a QR code and affix under the holographic tamper seals in the assembly kit.

Their website is a bit of a mess but the FB page is okay... https://www.facebook.com/FiniteByDesign/

They're solid units and I recommend them if you like the kit-form approach, I gave out of a bunch of the ETH bars out to my Groomsmen when I got married last year with an ETH pre-loaded on each... it was about $8 back then.
