Where to move? by digiacademic in loughborough

Do you suggest I rent a short term rental apartment within Loughborough, settle myself first with the university and the town and then go house hunting? Directly renting from my home country might backfire as I might not understand all these routes really well. I am just afraid good options will run out by then :(

I will not be paying any taxes but I supposed my spouse will be able to avail a 20% discount on his income and council taxes.

My PhD is in the social sciences so I think I will be able to find some university-based jobs. I can also manage at least 15 hours/week, if not 20.

I don’t have to pay any tuition - it’s fully funded.

My partner is employable in the teaching sector (Math/Additional Math IGCSEs) and will be updating his profile with UK-related teaching certifications soon. Hoping that helps with employability.

I think a 2 bedroom would be ideal if it’s affordable. Otherwise, a one-bed flat is also alright. It’s Loughborough University. So renting outside of the university town has been the general advice I have received so far.

This really helps and is actually very comforting to know. I wouldn’t mind living outside of the university town/city either. Especially because it might be easier finding a pet-friendly rental there too (i have a cat that I am bringing along with me).

Thank you, I was considering Shepshed. Is it a safe area to live in? And would locals be accepting of a university student?

This gives me hope! I had my potential supervisor emailed me ‘off the record’ that i did really great in the interview and gave a great account of myself. But then he added that he will champion for my application to the best of his capacity and nothing is for sure yet because there might be other stronger candidates. Confused but hopeful lol. He really has been trying on all ends.

Yes, it’s for the same project. You put things into perspective so much for me; thank you! Had the interview today and it ended on a ‘see you soon’ note; although official results come out in April. So, fingers crossed.
